Benjamin Hartley (1837-1912), a Scottish born artist, was educated at the Theological Seminary in Gambier, Ohio, and traveled to West Africa in 1864 as a missionary. There, he met and married Emily Griswold (1838-1906). Hartley sketched, painted and photographed the landscape and peoples of Africa until 1867, when the couple returned to the United States. Hartley's scrapbooks and sketchbooks are located at AAS. The present small grouping descends from a family member. A) Four pen-and-ink drawings, on J. Whatman wove paper, 3 signed: "Ku ah Kai" (spirit house); Calling the Spirits; Hn? the Deyâ; Samples of Gree grees . Liberia: 1860s. Each approx. 4-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches.
