The first translated edition of an intriguing study into Orientalist paintings, combining colonialism, romanticism and exotic pleasures, in the scarce original slipcase The Orientalists, the first worldwide study into the nineteenth century obsession of painting the Near East, written by Phillipe Jullian, and translated by Helga and Dinah Harrison. The first translated edition, published by Phaidon in 1977, first published by Office du Livre in French. In the publisher's original blue cloth, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Contains numerous colour and monochrome full-page and in-text illustrations throughout. Collated complete.Stretching from Southern Spain, across North Africa and into the Middle East, Orientalist paintings encompass Europeans depicting lands they always believed to be both mystical and exotic. End papers are bright and clean with one faint spot to right edge of front free end paper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Fine. book.
