Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good- dj. Illustrated by Robert Austin (illustrator). First American Edition. (price-clipped) [nice clean copy with minor shelfwear only; jacket is edgeworn, with tiny chips at bottom corners of front panel, a number of short tears at corners and edges, spine moderately faded but still readable, tiny label with author's name affixed to lower spine]. (line drawings) A novel that comes with a warning: "Men are herewith warned, and women advised, that this is a book for women. Women alone will appreciate it, understand it, love it. [It] is just a joyous, light-hearted account of the holiday trip taken by two young married women both intelligent yet frivolous. Having no men along, they could be wholly feminine in their observations and confidences and renew without reticence the comparing of notes begun years before when they were girls in school together. If you nurse a secret longing -- and who of us does not? -- to 'get away from it all' for a while, this book was written for you." Published the previous year in England by J.M. Dent & Sons.

Saint Bernardine of Siena, (1380-1444; canonised 1450; feast day May 20), Franciscan theologian and preacher of great eloquence who, with Saints John of Capistrano and James of the March, led the growth of the Observants, a strict branch of the Franciscan order that subsequently spread throughout Europe. Bernardine became a priest in 1404 but did not begin his renowned preaching tours through Italy until 1417. Appalled by the breakdown in morals, the lawlessness, and the civil strife that resulted from the Great Western Schism, he strove to restore morals by inculcating a deep personal love of Jesus Christ.

In den WarenkorbVellum. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Robert Austin (illustrator). First edition. A lovely limited edition copy on the life of Bernardino of Siena, containing moral lessons attributed to him, bound in vellum and signed by artist Robert Austin with numerous illustrated engravings. First Limited Edition, being No. 55 of one-hundred and five copies that were printed on handmade paper and bound in a full vellum binding.Signed by the artist Robert Austin (1895-1973) to the limited edition statement page. Austin was considered to be one of Britain's leading twentieth century printmakers, alongside his illustrating, engraving, and currency designs.Illustrated with a frontispiece, an engraved title page, three full-page engravings, and twenty-three in-text engravings by Austin. This is a wonderful biographical account of Bernardino of Siena (1380-1444) the Italian priest and Franciscan missionary, which also contains many of his sermons and moral tales. Bernardino was canonised by the Catholic Church and is sometimes referred to as the 'Apostle of Italy' because of his efforts to revive Catholicism in the 15th century. He is the patron saint of advertising, communications, compulsive gambling, respiratory problems, 'as well as any problems involving the chest area', and the patron saint of Carpi, Italy.Contents include 'Bernardino in his Times', 'Bernardino the Franciscan', as well as 'Examples of San Bernardino', containing sermons like 'The Vanity of Woman', 'A New Method of Teaching', 'A Canine Saint', and 'The Malice of Party Men'.Written and collected by Ada Harrison (1899-1958), a South African writer who spent most of her life within London. Harrison published various works on Italy, and was also the wife of Robert Austin, who she met during her travels in Italy. With an institutional bookplate to front paste down belonging to the Brooklyn Public Library, as well as a prior owner's bookplate belonging to John M. Cameron.Collated, complete. Bound in the publisher's original full vellum binding. Externally, excellent, with minimal wear to extremities and just a bit of age-toning to spine and boards, with a few spots. Illustrated bookplates to front paste down, with age-toning and a few spots to the endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very clean throughout, and are just lightly age-toned. The odd institutional mark, with an inscription to the corner of one of the plates, which does not affect the image. Very Good Indeed. book.
