Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Alan Sutton Edition. Paperback. The Town Labourer. Foxing to end inside covers and edge. This book gives a picture of the social conditions created by the Industrial Revolution. The book begins by considering the character of life in the towns during the period. The Industrial Revolution led to huge increases in population in the towns and the daily lives of the workers were shaped by long working days. Leisure was only tolerated within the narrowest of limits, even music being considered a 'demoralizing' influence, and education was feared as making men less passive and therefore less useful. Later chapters describe the aggravating effect of the war with France, which brought uncertainty and disorder to both employer and labourer, the mobilization of workers, which led to Peterloo and the call for a minimum wage, and the employment of children in mill, mine and factory. The book also includes an account of the defences of the poor, with the rise of the Co-operative Movement and the Friendly Societies and the Evangelical revival, as workers turned to the more sympathetic chapels of the Methodists and Nonconformists. 346 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
