"After the death of Captain G.H. Lacy, Messrs. W. Newman and Co. bought the copywright of the North Punjab Fishing Club Anglers' Handbook. Captain Lacy was such a good sportsman that his ideas on fishing deserve to be put on permanent record. In this third edition, I have prefixed his name to the chapters written by him, I have made only a few insignificant corrections from a natural history point of view in the text. A supplementary chapter on Fishing Tackle has been added, and a list of the commoner fishes likely to be met with by the fisherman. The letters on localities have been rearranged, and a few more added." (From Dr. Cretin's preface to the third edition). A short appendix (three pages) gives brief information on flyfishing for mahseer. .

Part II contains an extensive list of fishing venues, many of which are outside the Punjab, such as Afghanistan, Kumaon, Kashmir, Assam and Burma. First published in 1888 with a second edition following in 1890. The third edition, 1895, was revised and enlarged by Dr. Eugene Cretin following the death of the author in 1894, aged just 38. This re-titled fourth edition was, again, revised by Dr. Cretin "In the present edition of the 'North Punjab Fishing Club Anglers' Handbook' the title has been changed to 'Anglers' Handbook for India', because the original title was thought to be too long, and the first half was an anachronism. .After the departure of Captain Lacy from Rawalpindi, the Club died a natural death. And after the death of Captain Lacy, Messrs. W. Newman & Co. bought the copyright of his book. Captain Lacy was one of the best fishermen that India has seen, and his ideas on fishing deserve to be preserved. The chapters written by him have, accordingly, been left practically as he wrote them; and bear his name at the head." (From Dr. Cretin's preface to the fourth edition). .
