Utrecht, Stichting A.G. van Hamel voor Keltische Studies, 2023. 104 pp. Ills (chiefly col.). Orig. softcover (pictorial wrappers). 4to. "In 1923, Anton Gerard van Hamel (1886-1945) was appointed professor of Germanic language and literature in Utrecht. When Celtic was added to his brief, the academic study of the Celtic languages and literatures first acquired formal standing within Dutch academia. Van Hamel bridges the gap between two worlds, that of Old Germanic studies and Celtic studies, and his capacity for connecting the two is reflected in his many contacts with scholars in Ireland and Wales as well as in Iceland and Denmark. His international career covers the period between and during the two world wars, and is marked by setbacks and triumphs, by arrests and friendships, and by vilification and admiration. This publication celebrates the centenary of the chair of Celtic in Utrecht and pays tribute to A. G. van Hamel, a multifaceted man and trailblazing scholar."
