Kurz nach seinem Tode erschien 1633 eine aus fliegenden Blättern zusammengestellte Gesamtausgabe seiner Dichtungen, und dreißig Jahre lang lief eine Auflage nach der anderen von der Presse in dichterer Folge als die Folioausgabe der Dramen Shakespeares. Mit dem Aufstieg John Miltons, dem neoklassizistischen Dichter des sich konsolidierenden Bürgertums, fiel Donne der Vergessenheit anheim. Die Neuentdeckung Donnes im 20. Jahrhundert, bei der sich bedeutende Lyriker und Literaturwissenschaftler hervortaten, ging weit über die Rehabilitierung einer vielleicht zu Unrecht vernachlässigten Nebenfigur hinaus.
