30 inches x 25 inches (illustrator). 30 inches x 25 inches. Portrait of a Prominent Philadelphia Lawyer-Politician by One of America's First Professional Female Artists Waugh, Ida [1846-1919]. [Portrait of William Worthington Haly]. Philadelphia, 1889. Image size 30" x 25" (76 x 63.5 cm), signed "Ida Waugh, 1889" in lower right corner. Oil on canvas in ornate nineteenth-century gilded wood frame, plaque reading "William Worthington Haly/ Obt. Decem. 26th 1851/ Ida Waugh Pinxt/ The Law Association of Philadelphia" to head of frame. Some minor nicks and chips to frame, gilding slightly dulled, otherwise fine. $4,500. * Born in Ireland, William Worthington Haly [1805-1851] immigrated to the United States and became a distinguished member of the Philadelphia bar, later representing the city in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He is best remembered in legal history as the co-author (alongside Francis Troubat) of The Practice in Civil Actions. (1837), a monumental treatise that served as the foundational authority on Pennsylvania civil procedure for generations. Because Haly died in 1851, this 1889 portrait was executed posthumously by Waugh, likely commissioned by the Law Association to honor his lasting legacy. A lifelong Philadelphian, Ida Waugh was a trailblazer among America's first generation of successful professional female artists and illustrators. She received her early training from her father, the distinguished portraitist and panoramic painter Samuel B. Waugh [1814-1885]. She went on to study formally at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before traveling to Paris to hone her skills at the prestigious Academie Julian and Academie Delecluse. This portrait was long held in the institutional collection of the Philadelphia Bar Association. Founded in 1802 as the Law Association of Philadelphia, it holds the distinction of being the oldest association of lawyers in the United States. The portrait was long displayed in the association's historic library, which was renamed the Theodore F. Jenkins Memorial Law Library in 1967.
