Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. [12], 499, [1] pages. Illustrations. Authors' Note. Index. DJ has minor wear and soiling. Mark Evan Halperin (born January 11, 1965) is an American journalist, currently a host and commentator for Newsmax TV. Halperin previously worked as the political director at ABC News, where he served as the editor of the Washington, D.C., newsletter The Note. In 2010, Halperin joined MSNBC, becoming the senior political analyst and a contributor. Along with John Heilemann, Halperin served as co-managing editor of Bloomberg Politics. Halperin and Heilemann co-wrote Game Change and Double Down: Game Change 2012, were co-hosts of MSNBC and Bloomberg's With All Due Respect, and produced and co-starred with Mark McKinnon in Showtime's The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth, which followed the presidential candidates behind the scenes of their campaigns in the 2016 United States Presidential Election. John Arthur Heilemann (born January 23, 1966) is an American journalist and national affairs analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. He is the author of Pride Before the Fall (2001), a book about the Microsoft antitrust case. He has been a staff writer for New York, Wired, and The Economist. He was the host of a four-part documentary series for Discovery called Download: the True Story of the Internet, about the rise of the World Wide Web, which first aired in 2008. In their runaway bestseller Game Change, Mark Halperin and John Heilemann captured the full drama of Barack Obama's improbable, dazzling victory over the Clintons, John McCain, and Sarah Palin. With the same masterly reporting, unparalleled access, and narrative skill, Double Down picks up the story in the Oval Office, where the president is beset by crises both inherited and unforeseen, facing defiance from his political foes, disenchantment from the voters, disdain from the nation's powerful money machers, and dysfunction within the West Wing. As 2012 looms, leaders of the Republican Party, salivating over Obama's political fragility, see a chance to wrest back control of the White House, and the country. So how did the Republicans screw it up? How did Obama survive the onslaught of super PACs and defy the predictions of a one-term presidency? Double Down follows the gaudy carnival of GOP contenders, ambitious and flawed, famous and infamous, charismatic and cartoonish, as Mitt Romney, the straitlaced, can-do, gaffe-prone multimillionaire from Massachusetts, scraped and scratched his way to the nomination. Double Down exposes blunders, scuffles, and machinations far beyond the klieg lights of the campaign trail: Obama storming out of a White House meeting with his high command after accusing them of betrayal. Romney's mind-set as he made his controversial 47 percent comments. The real reasons New Jersey governor Chris Christie was never going to be Mitt's running mate. The intervention held by the president's staff to rescue their boss from political self-destruction. The way the tense détente between Obama and Bill Clinton morphed into political gold. And the answer to one of the campaign's great mysteries, how did Clint Eastwood end up performing Dada dinner theater at the Republican convention? In Double Down, Mark Halperin and John Heilemann take the reader into back rooms and closed-door meetings, laying bare the secret history of the 2012 campaign for a panoramic account of an election that was as hard fought as it was lastingly consequential. Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times: "Those hungry for political news will read Double Down for the scooplets and insidery glimpses it serves up about the two campaigns, and the clues it offers about the positioning already going on among Republicans and Democrats for 2016 . The book testifies to its authors' energetic legwork and insider access. creating a novelistic narrative that provides a you-are-there immediacy. They succeed in taking readers interested in the backstabbing and backstage maneuvering of the 2012 campaign behind the curtains, providing a tactile. sense of what it looked like from the inside.". Daniel Kim (Author photograph for Mark Halperin) a (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Printing [Stated]. [10], 421, [1] pages. Maps. Illustrations. Pencil underlining and marks noted. Includes Authors' Note, Prologue, Appendix: How the AIDS Epidemic Can Be Overcome, Acknowledgments, Notes, References to the Appendix; Additional Suggested Readings; and Index. Drawing on remarkable new science, this book tells the story of how Western colonial powers unwittingly sparked the AIDS epidemic and then fanned its rise. Drawing on remarkable new science, Tinderbox overturns the conventional wisdom on the origins of the deadly AIDS epidemic, and the best ways to fight it today. Recent genetic discoveries have traced the birth of HIV to the forbidding equatorial forests of Cameroon, where chimpanzees carried a nearly identical virus for illennia without causing a major outbreak in humans. During the Scramble for Africa near the turn of the twentieth century, colonial companies blazed new routes through the jungle in search of rubber and other riches, sending African porters into remote regions rarely traveled before. It was here, during the age of European conquest, that humans first contracted the strain of HIV that would eventually cause 99 percent of AIDS deaths around the world. This book is an indictment of Western ineptitude and meddling and lost opportunities to prevent millions of infections and deaths. But it also contains valuable prescriptions for making change--and it's an important read for anyone who cares about Africa. Craig Timberg is a national technology reporter for The Washington Post, specializing in privacy, security and surveillance. Since joining The Post in 1998, he has been a reporter, editor and foreign correspondent and has co-authored a book, "Tinderbox: How the West Sparked the AIDS Epidemic and How the World Can Finally Overcome It." He contributed to The Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the National Security Agency. Before joining UNC-SPH in 2011 as an Adjunct Professor (equivalent Full Professor level), Dr. Halperin served on the faculty of the Harvard School of Public Health since 2006. Prior to that he was employed for over five years as the Senior HIV Prevention and Behavior Change Advisor at the US Agency for International Development. Dr. Halperin has conducted epidemiological and ethnographic research for forty years on a number of health and sociocultural issues in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa and other developing regions. Since completing his doctoral training in medical and cultural anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley in 1995, his work mainly focused on the heterosexual transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: This absorbing interdisciplinary study of HIV/AIDS explores how the West inadvertently unleashed the AIDS epidemic and then failed to combat it effectively, especially in the most vulnerable regions in Africa. Drawing on the latest genetic research, Washington Post reporter Timberg and Harvard epidemiologist and medical anthropologist Halperin trace the disease's origins in the Cameroonian jungle, where HIV's transmission from chimps to humans coincided with the rapacious period of colonial expansion as the quest for rubber sap and ivory created new transportation networks, along which the disease traveled, and a large, hectic colonial city (Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Africa's susceptibility, the authors suggest, was partly due to changing social customs. For example, Christian missionaries discouraged rituals such as male circumcision, now known to significantly reduce the spread of HIV. As the Western powers poured money into combating the spread of AIDS, they favored biomedical approaches and ignored potentially lifesaving African initiatives, such as modifying sexual behavior and male circumcision. Highlighting the politics of AIDS, where there were powerful incentives to work within the conventional wisdom to win lucrative government contracts, this timely exposé advocates practical solutions to a seemingly intractable problem. Jeffrey L. Ward (Maps) (illustrator).
