First Edition, Second Issue Variant of Volume I; First Issue of Volume II? A revised and greatly expanded version of Haliburton's A General Description of Nova Scotia (1823). The first volume comprises what is generally considered to be the first modern history of Nova Scotia (1497-1828), while the second contains geographical and statistical information, descriptions of the counties, details respecting population, Indian tribes, political and judicial systems, education, agriculture, trade, and natural history. Haliburton's romanticized portrayal of the Acadians and their expulsion in this work inspired Longfellow's poem Evangeline. The maps and plates, some, if not all, drawn and/or engraved by Charles W.Torbett include a map of the province, plans of Louisbourg (two), the Shubenacadie Canal Line, the proposed Bay Verte and St. Peter's Canals, and views of Halifax from Dartmouth Cove, Province House in Halifax, Front Street in Windsor, and the Port and Part of The Town of Annapolis. A mixed issue set. Volume I is a variant of the second issue, with a further Extract (from the North American Review, dated Jan. 1830) added in the prelims (see Morley).
