12mo (17.5cm). Cloth-backed boards lithographed in colors; 64pp; frontispiece and six leaves of plates by J.H. Howard, unnumbered but reckoned in pagination. At head of title page: "Little Boy's & Girl's Library." A well-preserved copy: slight rubbing and dust-soil to covers, with shallow horizontal crease to rear board; internally quite fresh, with all the plates present and in excellent condition: a solidly Very Good copy. Faint gift inscription to front endpaper, undated. Date of publication based on the AAS copy. A charmingly-illustrated juvenile, comprised of five short episodes, each illustrated with a color plate (tinted lithographs with hand-coloring) by J.H. Howard, as follows: "Pride, and its consequences; as exhibited in the history of little John and Henry"; "Passion. And its consquences; as exhibited in the history of Paul Pepper"; "Idleness, and its consequences; as exhibited in the history of David Drone"; "Charles Candid; or, The boy who always spoke the truth"; and, "Peter Polish; or, The polite boy". AAS attributes the final two stories to Robert Edgar. Quite scarce: of this edition, we can confirm only a single copy in OCLC (AAS); another possible match at New Hampshire Historical Society. Preceded by an 1854 edition in slightly different format and with fewer illustrations.
