There is internal information that this is the April, 1861 issue. Godey's Lady's Book, alternatively known as Godey's Magazine and Lady's Book, was a United States women's magazine that was published inPhiladelphia. It was the most widely circulated magazine in the period before the Civil War. Its circulation rose from 70,000 in the 1840s to 150,000 in 1860. In the 1860s Godey's considered itself the "queen of monthlies". The magazine was published by Louis A. Gogey from Philadelphia for 48 years (1830-1878). Godey intended to take advantage of the popularity of gift books, many of which were marketed specifically to women. Each issue contained poetry, articles, and engravings created by prominent writers and other artists of the time. Sarah Josepha Hale (author of "Mary Had a Little Lamb") was its editor from 1837 until 1877 and only published original, American manuscripts. Although the magazine was read and contained work by both men and women. Hale published three special issues that only included work done by women.When Hale started at Godey's, the magazine had a circulation of ten thousand subscribers. Two years later, it jumped to 40,000 and by 1860 had 150,000 subscribers.In 1845, Louis Godey began copyrighting each issue of the magazine to prevent other magazine and newspaper editors from infringing their texts. This move, a first in America, was criticized by editors at the Baltimore Saturday Visiter. They called it a "narrowly selfish course" and stated that Godey would "rue it bitterly" Poor. This appears to be an incomplete issue, missing the last page.

Godey's is famous for its tri-fold and bi-fold, colored, fashion plates. In this copy, only a single panel remains for the Feb, April, May, July issues, the folding part having snapped off and been lost. There are patterns (some in color) and engravings and black and white images aplenty. There is a separate title page after the June issue for Vol LXV of the Lady's Book, for the Jul - Dec portion. There is light dampstaining along the front and bottom edges of the pages. Good. The first appearance of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Drowne's Wooden Image", which was later published in his collection of stories "Mosses From an Old Manse". In an August 1844 letter to James Russell Lowell, Edgar Allan Poe writes: "Do you ever see Mr. Hawthorne? He is a man of rare genius. A day or two since I met with a sketch by him called 'Browne's Wooden Image' - delicious. The leading idea, however, is suggested by Michael Angelo's couplet."Referred to as the "Cradle of Liberty", Faneuil Hall in Boston hosted many important meetings before the Revolution. Rebuilt in 1762, a third story was added by Charles Bulfinch in 1805 and a weathervane subsequently adorned its steeple. Considered one of the most noted steeple adornment in Boston, this weathervane with its grasshopper sculpture, was inspired by the character of Shem Drowne, the protagonist of Hawthorne's "Browne's Wooden Image".Early experimenters in the field of lithography, James McGuigan with Edward J. Pinkerton and Thomas Wagner formed the firm of Pinkerton, Wagner & McGuigan to produce book and periodical illustrations. From their 100 Chestnut Street location, they produced plates for "Godey's Magazine" and the "Guide to Laurel Hill Cemetery, Near Philadelphia" among others. Their experiments in the art of lithography led to their being awarded the silver medal for "polychromic lithography" at the 1844 Franklin Institute Exhibition of American Manufacturers.

A nice run of this classic publication comprising 48 monthly issues from Jan. 1865 to Dec. 1868 (Vols LXX - LXXVII). Each issue has its folding hand-tinted fashion plate. There are a total of 48 of them in t…his set. The issues also have sewing patterns, engravings, poetry, articles, recipes, editorials, sheet music and much more. The only thing which might be lacking from this set are some of the foldout sewing patterns although the one-page and color patterns all appear to be present. This is a very good set with some light rubbing and wear to the bindings. The contents are very good with some occasional light foxing and spotting to the margins. The color plates are all in excellent condition with no chips or tears. A few of them have some foxing or spotting in the margin but not many. The folding sewing patterns in the 1868 volume have some chipping at the top edge. Postage on this heavy set will be extra, especially overseas.
