Interesting Wellesley College association: Shackford and Margaret Sherwood were Wellesley Professors and appar…ently friends of Jeanette Marks, who taught English at Mt. Holyoke for 38 years. Marks was the subject of controversy for her relationship with the President of Mt. Holyoke, Mary Woolley (see 1978 book on this by Anna Wells). Shackford's mother was a born Cartland - Here: A compilation of letters and comments edited by Shackford, Emeritus Professor of English literature at Wellesley College: "printed for the younger descendents of Moses A. Cartland" - "The informality, naturalness, and jesting moods give a pleasant picture of family relationships in a world of Quakers who loved domestic peace but were, nevetheless, ardent Abolitionists." Includes genealogy of Whittier and Cartland families and also reprints the editors 1904 article, A Child's Impressions of Whittier. John Greenleaf Whittier lived: 1807-1892.

First Canadian Edition. Bartlett was captain of the Karluk, the ship carrying the northern party of the Canadian Arctic expedition of 191…3-16 led by Vilhjalmar Stefansson. He recounts his voyage north to Alaska from Esquimault, the departure of Stefansson and others to search for fresh meat when the ship was trapped by ice, the drift in Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, the sinking of the Karluk, the sledge journey to Wrangell Island, and the eventual rescue of the survivors. Almost half of the crew died on the expedition. cfArctic Bib. 1112.

This Episcopal cleric served as Bishop of Utah from 1917 to 1919, Missionary Bishop of Idaho from 1919 to 1924 and Bishop of Western Colorado from 1917 to 1924. TLS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Grand Junction, CO, 30 November 1918. Addressed to Messrs. Mitchell & Smith of Charleston, South Carolina. Very good. Faintly age toned, with origina…l folds. On letterhead of "The Missionary District of Western Colorado," the prelate discusses conditions of "the will of Miss Margaret Murdoch" with these attorneys, innocently enquiring "Will you kindly advise me at your earliest convenience as to the amount of this bequest?" Signed large and full in brown ink, below which he pens "Acting Bishop of Utah." An uncommon oddity.
