Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. [14]. 441, [9] pages. Illustrations. Endpaper maps. Glossary. Ink date written on fep. David Haskell Hackworth (November 11, 1930 - May 4, 2005) also known as Hack, was a prominent military journalist and a former United States Army colonel who was decorated…in both the Korean War and Vietnam War. Hackworth is known for his role in the creation and command of Tiger Force, a military unit which was formed in South Vietnam to apply guerrilla warfare tactics against Viet Cong guerrilla fighters. Hackworth is also known for his accusation in 1996 that Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Mike Boorda was wearing two unauthorized service ribbon devices on two of his uniform's awards denoting valor in combat. Although Admiral Boorda had served off the coast of Vietnam in the 1960s and believed he was authorized to wear the two wartime decorations for meritorious service, he did not meet the Navy's requirements. "Steel My Soldiers' Hearts" is a tour de force of frontline combat action beginning the moment Hackworth's Huey lands in the Delta in January 1969 and ending shortly after he collects his eighth Purple Heart. This is retired Colonel David Hackworth's account of his tour of duty in Vietnam commanding the 4/39th, an infantry battalion operating south of Saigon in the Mekong River delta. Poorly led, with frightfully high casualties, and fighting in the most dangerous of terrain, the 4/39th was a dispirited and demoralized group when Hackworth assumed command in January, 1969. Hackworth fired many of the senior officers and then put the 4/39th through "Combat 101, " which made him so unpopular that at one point he was warned of a bounty some of his men had put on him. Over the next five months, however, Hackworth would transform the 4/39 from "hopeless to hardcore, " dramatically reverse the casualty rate, score some victories over the Viet Cong, and earn the respect of his troops. First edition. First edition/first printing [stated].

Hardcover. [14]. 4412 p. Illustrations. Endpaper maps. Glossary "Steel My Soldiers' Hearts" is narrative nonfiction at its best--a tour de force of frontline combat action beginning the moment Hackworth's Huey lands in the Delta in January 1969 and ending shortly after he collects his eighth Purple Heart. Steel My Soldiers' Hear…ts is retired Colonel David Hackworth's account of his tour of duty in Vietnam commanding the 4/39th, an infantry battalion operating south of Saigon in the Mekong River delta. Poorly led (the previous commander had based the battalion in the middle of a mine field), with frightfully high casualties (40 percent during the six months prior to Hackworth's arrival), and fighting in the most dangerous of terrain, the 4/39th was a dispirited and demoralized group when Hackworth assumed command in January, 1969. Upon arrival, Hackworth fired many of the senior officers and then put the 4/39th through "Combat 101, " which made him so unpopular that at one point Hackworth was warned of a bounty some of his men had put out on him. Over the next five months, however, Hackworth would transform the 4/39 from "hopeless to hardcore, " dramatically reverse the casualty rate, score some spectacular victories over the Viet Cong, and earn the undying respect of his troops. Here's a gung ho and earthy firsthand account of the Vietnam War that fans of We Were Soldiers Once. Very good in very good dust jacket. Corners of several pages creased. Small stain at bottom edge. First edition. FIrst edition/first printing [stated].

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. [14], 441 pages. Illustrations. Endpaper maps. Occasional Footnotes. Glossary. Signed by the author (David H. Hackworth) on the title page. DJ torn at back. The author's were husband and wife. From Wikipedia: "Colonel David Haskell… Hackworth (November 11, 1930 to May 4, 2005), also known as "Hack," was a highly decorated soldier, having received 24 decorations for heroism in combat from the Army Commendation Medal to the Distinguished Service Cross. He was also a prominent military journalist. During his time as a journalist, Hackworth investigated many subjects, including an assertion into the accused improper wearing of ribbons and devices by Admiral Mike Boorda, an investigation which is speculated to have driven Boorda to committing suicide. Hackworth is also known for his role in the creation and command of Tiger Force, a military unit formed during the Vietnam War to apply guerrilla warfare tactics to the fight against Vietnamese guerrillas." In January 1969, one of the most promising young lieutenant colonels the US Army had ever seen touched down in Vietnam for his second tour of duty, which would turn out to be his most daring and legendary. David H. Hackworth had just completed the writing of a tactical handbook for the Pentagon, and now he had been ordered to put his counterguerilla-fighting theories into action. He was given the morale-drained 4/39th-a battalion of draftees suffering the Army's highest casualty rate. Hackworth's inventive and inspired leadership quickly turned the 4/39th into Vietnam's valiant and ferocious Hardcore Recondos. Drawing on interviews with soldiers from the Battalion conducted over the past decade by his partner and coauthor, Eilhys England, Hackworth takes readers along on their sniper missions, ambush actions, helicopter strikes and inside the quagmire of command politics. With Steel My Soldiers' Hearts, Hackworth places the brotherhood of the 4/39th into the pantheon of our nation's most heroic warriors. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Pratt, Bob [Maps} (illustrator).
