Biographical text by Paul Acker. Fourteen of the personages are also represented by chromolithograph caricatures after Leonetto Cappiello. Other portrait illustrations by Hermann Vogel. Elephant Folio. 2pp., 12 parts with 4 plates each, all in original light blue illustrated wraps as issued; housed in it original green cloth portfolio with elaborate gilt decor, flowers and birds, and lettering on cover, beveled edges, with decorative paper-covered flaps; protected by modern mylar. The portfolio provides decorative ideas of artist Jules Hebert-Dys for ceramics, fabric, jewelry, furniture and house decor on forty-eight plates. The beautiful color motifs, with gilt and silver overprinting, depict birds, fish, cows, cranes, flowers, ceramics, wall decorations, umbrellas, jewelry, various fabrics, scarfs, panels, wallpaper, bookbinding, tea sets, an embroidered collar, dishes, etc. The album heralds the movement from the so-called Japonisme (Philippe Burty) to the sentimental glug of past pastiches to Art Nouveau. The plates were printed to "papier du Chine" by the lithographer Charles Gillot and pasted to heavy handmade paper. Includes separate printed leaf listing titles of all plates in six languages, French, German, English, Dutch, Italian, and Spanish. Complete set with some miss- and overprints in the numeration of plates. Portfolio with light wear along edges and inner flaps. Leaf with list of plates with some creasing, small closed tears and very light foxing. Handmade paper with some foxing (margins), prints fine. Quite scarce in the original publisher's case.

All wrappers and parts are on very fragile paper with edge toning and chipping that does not go into the images. A very scarce group of prints. Ex library with a small stamp to back side.

"Eaux-fortes pour illustrer les contes de Godard d'Aucour" est un portfolio artistique publié à Paris en 1883 et composé de gravures originales réalisées par Jules Habert-Dys. Ces eaux-fortes illustrent les contes galants et satiriques de l'écrivain français Claude Godard d'Aucour, auteur du XVIIIe siècle connu pour ses récits libertins et spirituels décrivant les moeurs de l'aristocratie. Les gravures, exécutées d'après des compositions inspirées de l'époque, recréent l'atmosphère élégante et légèrement ironique de ces récits. L'ensemble s'inscrit dans la série bibliophilique "Petits conteurs du XVIIIe siècle", éditée par Octave Uzanne et publiée par l'imprimeur-éditeur A. Quantin à Paris. Le portfolio comprend six planches gravées à l'eau-forte par Jules Habert-Dys: un frontispice allégorique et cinq scènes illustrant différents épisodes des contes de Godard d'Aucour. Les compositions s'inspirent de l'esthétique du XVIIIe siècle et représentent des scènes galantes mettant en scène personnages aristocratiques, salons élégants et situations satiriques caractéristiques de la littérature libertine de cette période. Les gravures témoignent du renouveau de l'eau-forte artistique au XIXe siècle et de l'intérêt des bibliophiles pour l'illustration d'oeuvres littéraires anciennes. Claude Godard d'Aucour (1716-1795) fut un écrivain français du XVIIIe siècle associé à la littérature galante et libertine. Ses contes et récits courts décrivent avec ironie les intrigues sentimentales et les moeurs de la société aristocratique de son temps. Le graveur Jules Auguste Habert-Dys (1850-1930) était un artiste français, dessinateur et aquafortiste actif dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Il réalisa de nombreuses illustrations pour des ouvrages bibliophiliques et participa au renouveau de l'estampe artistique en France.

Everything from the design of the binding to the splendid typography, borders, and layout were the work of Jules-Auguste Habert-Dys. One of an edition of 125 copies in English, none of which are listed on OCLC, which lists a copy of the French edition at Madison.
