Burgundy pebble grain cloth boards. Gilt stamps of the General Assembly New Zealand Library at tail of spine and on front board. Page edges sprinkled red. ; Uncommon. (iii)-viii, 150 pages. Half-calf binding. Page dimensions: 211 x 131mm. Spine title: "WESTERN DISTRICTS OF NELSON. HAAST." "Yesterday evening I had set fire to the high fern before us in order to have an easier walk with our heavy loads, and during the night it was a splendid sight to see the surrounding country in flames, the ti trees amongst the fern appearing like distinct columns of fire." - pages 19-20. "Before starting, I had rather a stormy scene with the native whom I had engaged at the Mawhera pah, because I would not permit him to select his own load, but compelled him, as was fair, to take that which was determined to be his by lot. To this he would not submit, and seizing the paddles, he attempted to take the canoe, which did not belong to him, and return to the pah. It is scarcely necessary to assert that I objected strongly to his proceedings, and it was only after considerable time that I could bring him back to his duty." - page 33. "The river bed was here very narrow, all before and around us were breakers formed by the rushing of the torrent over snags, which encumbered the river in every direction. We travelled at the rate of ten miles an hour at the least, and all the skill and energy of the Maories were required to guide the canoe safely through: not a word was spoken, everyone looked before him, expecting each moment that the canoe would be dashed to pieces agains a tree." - page 42. "[. . .] arrived at the famous cliff of the Miko. As this cliff is not merely perpendicular, but in some places overhangs, the Maories have constructed two ladders, one fifteen feet, and the other thirty-one feet in length, and consisting of pieces of rata lashed together with flax, the steps being placed at irregular intervals." - pages 47-48. "I was much interested here on observing the tracks of numerous kakapos, or night parrots, which seemed to lead a tranquil life, unmolested by wild dogs, by which these beautiful birds have almost been extirpated in other places, existing now only on the mountain tops and in a few very remote valleys." - page 57. "No large myriapode came within my observation, and the few ants which we met with occasionally were never troublesome." - page 145. [Bibliographical references: Bagnall 2401 - "Although much of Haast's Nelson survey of 1860 which he undertook for the Nelson Provincial Government was in the footsteps of Heaphy, Brunner, the Mackays and Rochfort, the journey was the first scientific appraisal which included the discovery of the Coalbrookdale (Denniston) coal field. The eight months' walk with James Burnett and five others was from Rotoiti and Rotoroa to the Buller, the Maruia, Rahu Saddle to the Grey, the Mawheraiti and thence up the coast to Collingwood. The first 69 pages of the Report describe the journey; Chapter II covers physical geography, III Geology and the final three, roads, passes and land, zoology and botany."; Hocken p. 208 - "An eight months' exploration, in 1860, from Nelson to the Grey, Buller, &c., and back. The account of bird-life is especially interesting."].

Folio (21 x 17 inches). 15 chromolithographed plates mounted on card (small tears in text leaver where plates have adhered). Original green cloth, gilt (rebacked to style). Provenance: with the bookplate of Forbes Library Northampton, Mass, on the front paste-down and their perforated library stamp on the title-page. "Mr. Gully ranks as one of the most accomplished artists New Zealand has produced" (Hocken). First English edition, first published in Dunedin, New Zealand, the same year. With an introduction and explanatory text by his friend and patron, the geologist, von Haast, who through "achievements and his encouragement, science in New Zealand came of age": "It is impossible, without having seen them, to form any adequate idea of the grandeur of those gigantic masses of rock, snow, and ice which abound in the wild and desolate region of these Southern Alps. It was the privilege of the writer to have been the first explorer and delineator of these regions, it is almost impossible to convey through a small number of pictures and adequate representation of the varied scenery of these beautiful islands, but those which Mr. Gully has selected for publication are well chosen, and are sufficiently striking and characteristic to give the lover of nature some idea of the infinite beauty of that land" (Introduction). While drawing master at Nelson College, in New Zealand, from 1861 to 1863, Gully he sketched in the Nelson Lakes area and painted local scenes. "More importantly, he produced 12 watercolour paintings of South Island mountains and glaciers from sketches by Julius Haast. This set of paintings was used to illustrate Haast's lecture on the mountains and glaciers of the Canterbury province, which was read to the Royal Geographical Society in London on 8 February 1864. Gully exhibited at the New Zealand Exhibition in Dunedin in 1865, showing work on behalf of the survey office and on his own account. He gained a silver medal and sold all the paintings he exhibited. This recognition placed his name at the forefront of New Zealand watercolourists. His reputation was further enhanced by his exhibits at the Nelson Institute Exhibition in February 1866. The paintings included scenes of the town of Nelson, the Kaikoura Mountains, Mt Cook (from sketches by John Rochfort), and the West Coast. Some of the paintings went on to the Intercolonial Exhibition of Australasia in Melbourne in 186667. Two paintings sold for £60 each and Gully made arrangements for agents to sell his work in Melbourne. He began an association with the Victoria Academy of Arts and was represented at many of its exhibitions. In 1873 he visited Victoria briefly and praised the people as his first real patrons. In 1865 there had been an unsuccessful attempt to publish a portfolio of his paintings of New Zealand. In 1877 the project finally came to fruition with the publication in Dunedin and London of New Zealand scenery. The 15 chromolithographs based on Gully's original watercolours were accompanied by descriptive text written by Haast. The plates depict prominent landmarks and scenes, from Mt Taranaki and Lake Taupo in the north to Bradshaw Sound in the south. Gully was disappointed with the reproductions, which are gaudy by comparison with the light and airy originals" (The Encyclopedia of New Zealand online). Ellis 926-940; NBNZ 2377. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.

The first paper is by the British palaeontologist, ichthyologist and ornithologist Edward Tulley Newton (1840-1930), and deals with a British Palaeogene species; the second and third are by the German-born New Zealand palaeontologist and ornithologist Johann Franz Julius von Haast (1822-1887) and deal with Pleistocene or Holocene extinct birds from New Zealand. All three are well-illustrated. Wrappers a tiny bit abraded at spine ends; otherwise an excellent, clean copy - about the best one can get. All three papers neither in Cat.
