Zustand: Very good condition. Real photograph views of pre War Japan by the Hungarian born photographer Francis Haar (1908 -1997). Haar moved to Japan in 1939 at the invitation of Hiroshi Kawazoe and the International Cultural Society of Japan. He opened a portrait studio in Tokyo between 1940 - 1942 and began recording the people, culture and landscape. When the war commenced the family was interned; he began again as a photographer for the American occupation in 1945. By the 1950s Haar was taking portraits of the Japanese, famous and not so famous alike, including Emperor Hirohito's young brother, the philosopher D.T. Suzuki, and movie director Akira Kurosawa. This album's images include: Outdoor market; pilgrims on the way to a shrine; ox cart and buckets; typical sea food shop; roadside tea shop; souvenir shop; typical side street shop; geta and sandal shop; sidewalk toy vendor; and drinks and snacks stand. Gray card stock, title in black at front wrapper, bound with orange ribbon. Front wrapper faintly marked; previous owner name struck out on inside of rear wrapper. 5 1/4 x 3 1/2".

Album is Fairly Good solid, not broken, with some wea especially on backstrip and some fraying of cloth at folds and tips ; lacks one of the two original ivory clasps. Beautiful pictures of traditional Japan! Great gift idea. Pictures available on request.
