Original cloth binding, xix, 419 pages, binding rubbed at frayed at top of spine, tear at the bottom of spine, a previous owner used the last blank page to make designs for symbols using the letters "A" and "E", also Leh and Murree are mentioned, inner hinges cracked (but binding is firm), otherwise inside a clean copy in a variant black binding with gilt title on spine and gilt decoration at top and bottom of spine. Henry Walter Bellew MRCP (30 August 1834 26 July 1892) was an Indian-born British medical officer who worked in Afghanistan. In 1873-1874 Bellew participated in the Second Yarkand Mission led by Thomas Douglas Forsyth. The book describes this expedition. The main goal of the expedition was to meet Yakub Beg, the ruler of Chinese Turkestan. He was accompanied on the mission by John Biddulph, Ferdinand Stoliczka (who died on that expedition), Thomas Edward Gordon, Henry Trotter, and R. A. Champman. Bellew, who spoke Farsi, sympathetically described the conditions in Kashgar as they were disclosed to him. Rare in commerce. The Brooke-Hitching copy was sold in 2014 for 2.750 £, another copy in similar condition as the present one 2016 in New York for USD 2,340. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
