Most of the inhabitants of Sidderton were asleep that night so they never knew what had happened. Some might have guessed from the howling wind of the previous day, one or two heard its noise, but no one actually saw it. If they had they might have been more prepared for what was to follow. Small 4to, 8vo, and oblong 8vo. Altogether 4½ pp. To John Henderson (1862-1938), Secretary of the National Liberal Club, on invitations and publications: "[.] Jacob has transmitted your request for a speech. Frankly I had much rather not speak. If I did that sort of thing at all well I would be very glad to do it, but I am - at this sort of thing - heavy, self-conscious, dull & disinteresting. No one would be the happier for my suffering and it would convert an occasion to which I look forward with the most festive anticipation, into a task and a terror [.]" (20 March 1903). - About the treatment of the political activist Clarence Henry Norman (1886-1974): "[.] why is Norman leaving the club? Is he being expelled for any reason? Or has he simply resigned his membership? [.]" - "[.] Mr C. H. Norman writes to complain that his membership of the N.L.C. has been 'cancelled' on account of his anti-war letters. I am half-shocked at this. He impresses me as being quite insane upon the war question but quite honest & I fail to see the justification for this expulsion of an esteemed most desirable member [.]" (undated, but ca. 1914). - "Dear Mr Henderson, Yes I'm sorry. But do you know I didn't enter the N.L.C. from one year's end to another. I have had to go through my list of annual subscriptions & cut them down. And there it is! [.]" (13 April 1932).

8vo. 1¾ pp. 8vo. To an unidentified recipient: "Dear Sir, Although I am anxious to help the country in this war, I cannot conceive any human being who is likely to be impressed by my inspired utterances upon the National War Bonds. I think you will do well to keep me & Little Tich & G.B.S. & so on out of this & get opinions from people of financial repute. A letter from Sir Alfred Mond or Lord Northcliffe saying that the bulk of his reserves is in N. W. Bonds will impress all of us [.]". - On stationery with printed address. From the collection of Diana Herzog.
