The concept of IPM has been developed to cope up with the diversity and complexity of pest problems which limit the production as well as the quality of produce. The horticultural crops are very important diversified group of crops which are susceptible to a large number of insects causing reduction in yield. In traditional agriculture the insect pests were kept under check by various cultural and mechanical approaches while modern agriculture relies upon the use of synthetic organic insecticides which has resulted in aggravated resistance and environmental problems. Besides providing background information for the important insect pests of vegetables fruits and ornamental plants this book discusses in detail about the insect pests behaviour nature and symptoms of attack host range and utilization of cultural biological chemical bio rational and other innovative approaches in an integrated way so as to mange them in a sustainable eco safe manner. The book will also be useful in providing valuable information to be implemented at the farmer's level. It also provides comprehensive information for teachers researchers and extension personnel engaged in designing and implementation of IPM programme for horticultural crops. 224 pp.

Insects pathogens nematodes and plants have co existed for nearly about 400 million years. Since then the above pests have been causing enormous losses to the plants amounted to 20 30% losses as per estimates given so far in the country. Realizing the role of these pests as limiting factor in agricultural productivity several methods were developed and incorporated into management program for economically important pests. Out of these use of insecticides could initially catch up to the growers because of their ready availability ability to suppress pest's populations quickly and increasing productivity. Their use in the past was intense in areas where the thrust was on increasing agricultural productivity and also in those regions where certain crops were introduced in new agro ecosystem. However in most instances their use proved to be a short term solution rather than a long term strategy. Pesticides are equally hazardous to livestock plants and also to the beneficial fauna and flora. Their influence on the non target organisms has caused ecological imbalance which is some times difficult to be restored. Dur.
