Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, University of Bayreuth, language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionCrime fiction belongs to the top selling literature long ago. But not at all times the same type of crime fiction has been favored. Already the bible contains narrations about crime, like the story of Cain and Abel, the most famous fratricide all over the world. The motive of crime draws through literature continuing and develops in various directions. Focusing on the main genres which emerged: detective fiction, Golden Age crime fiction, American hard-boiled crime fiction, the police procedural, and the thriller; this paper will concentrate on the development of crime fiction from the early beginnings up to now. Origins and characteristics will be analyzed and differences as well as similarities between the different genres will be represented.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,7, University of Bayreuth, language: English, abstract: Courtly love embraces a beautiful lady, married or unobtainable, who was the object of love for a knight. In general courtly love was secret and between man and woman of noble status and it was not practiced between husbands and wives. Such relationships did not exist in real medieval life. Marriages were mostly arranged and women were seen as property to their husbands. It was more an 'available fiction which informed the cultural climate, much as the wider conventions of chivalry did' (Rudd 2001:33).This is a relatively vague definition of the topic of courtly love and it only summarizes the most important points. This paper will work out the origins and the meaning of courtly love more intensive, watching its first origins and its appearance in the Romance of the Rose, and it will mention and describe every important characteristic. These characteristics will be a guideline to show Chaucer's treatment of the topic in his work The Canterbury Tales. Elements of courtly love appear in the Prologue, the Knight's Tale, the Merchant's Tale, and in the Franklin's Tale. These elements will be shown and explained. Finally a conclusion will summarize the most important points.

  • Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,7, University of Bayreuth, course: Forensic Linguistics, language: English, abstract: 'Parents lie to their children about sex to spare them knowledge they think their children are not ready for, just as their children when they become adolescents, will conceal sexual adventures because the parents won't understand. Lies occur between friends, witness and jury, lawyer and client, salesperson and customer. Lying is such a central characteristic of life that better understanding of it is relevant to almost all human affairs.' (Ekmann 2009:23)But what is a lie and which features make an utterance becoming a lie Two possible theories for a semantic analysis of lie exist, one the one hand the theory of semantic features, and on the other other hand the semantic prototype theory. This paper will deal with a prototypical analysis of lie.At first both theories will be shortly explained and it will be explained why the prototype theory is more suitable for the analysis of, than the theory of semantic features. Then a prototype schema for lie, as well as a prototype analysis of lie will be given. To confirm the general prototype hypothesis, the prototype definition of lie, and other hypotheses that will be made, an experiment of Coleman and Kay will be explained and its results will be analyzed. To check and confirm the hypotheses of Coleman and Kay again, two fellow students and me did the same experiment within the context of our presentation about linguistic clues to lie detection. The expectations we had and the results will be presented and our results will be compared with that of Coleman and Kay.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 1,7, University of Bayreuth, course: Essay writing II, language: English, abstract: The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) estimates 100 million vertebrates are used for experiments around the world every year . This paper deals with the necessity of animal experiments in research and possible alternatives which could replace them completely. With focus on the history of animal experiments, as for instance the birth of Dolly the sheep which was the first cloned mammal from an adult cell, the areas in which the animal experiments are used, the transferability of the results from these tests to human and the question according to alternatives to animal testing, the paper shows if it is possible to dispense with animal experiments. Information has been collected from technical literature, reports and internet articles. It is argued that animal experiments are necessary and current research has so far not been able to find alternatives which could replace them. However alternatives are described which reduce the number of animal experiments and avoid that animals suffer unnecessarily.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Bayreuth (Fakultät für Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaften), course: Projektseminar, language: English, abstract: With her Harry Potter novels, Joanne K. Rowling created a magical world including an enormous variety of fantastical characters, creatures, objects, and events. But not everyone immediately notices that a lot of those not only arose from her own imagination, but have their origins in history, mythology, and folklore. Hardly any other literary work disposes of such a huge collection of real mythology, history, and folklore, and it is nearly impossible to examine all characters', creatures' and objects' roots. That's why this paper will focus only on one aspect, namely the mythology appearing in the novels. When dealing with this topic, some questions arise, that shall be answered in this paper: Which myths, of which kind and origin appear in the stories How does Rowling use, embed, and modify them and how does this affect the stories To answer these questions first it is important to define the term myth. Then some mythic structures appearing in the novels will be examined, followed by a selection of mythic creatures, and mythic characters. Here some chosen creatures and characters out of the novels, as well as their mythical equivalents will be presented and compared to each other. Finally a conclusion will summarize the most important facts and answer the leading questions.

  • Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: With Sherlock Holmes, 'the character whose adventures revolutionized crime writing, setting the template for generations of fictional sleuths, [.] The character whose 'death' caused grief-stricken readers on the streets of London to wear black armbands' (Billingham xiii), Doyle created a detective who became one of the most famous characters in crime fiction. The world loved the stories about the genius detective and although Arthur Conan Doyle died, had a continuing demand for them. Many authors tried to fulfill this needs and a lot of pastiches, parodies and adaptations were produced until today, reaching from book form, movies, TV-series, over video games, up to graphic novels (Poore 1).The different adaptations vary in a great degree in how faithful they are to the source text and how far they differ from it. This paper will concentrate on a twenty-first-century adaptation, namely Guy Ritchie's movie Sherlock Holmes from 2009, and its fidelity to the source will be examined. How did Ritchie put the character of Sherlock Holmes and all his trappings into a modern context Which details out of Conan Doyle's version were borrowed and in which way do they appear in the movie And does he succeed in appealing a modern, twenty-first-century audience, although staying true with the source text Some general information about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, as well an analysis of the main characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, will serve as a basis for the comparison. The next important foundation will be laid by the explanation of adaptation theory, examining the notion of fidelity, and answering the questions if a strict fidelity is possible and even appropriate and how it can be put into practice. Then the comparison between the stories and the movie will be drawn, focusing on the plans the filmmakers had, and how they were applied, on details borrowed from the source and changes made, especially watching the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Finally a conclusion will be drawn and the most important points will be summarized.

  • Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 1,3, Universität Bayreuth, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This paper aims to explain the development of the vampire in English literature from the 19th century to the present, from a merciless evil monster to a beautiful hero. I will examine this evolution according to the already explained reasons: the use of vampires as metaphors for their age and as figures who give readers the possibility to reflect themselves in them.To form a basis I will start with an investigation of the vampires' origins in Eastern European folklore and the figures' entry into literature. This chapter will also include an examination of reasons for the vampires' constant popularity and development, with view to the observations of different researchers. Based on this I will examine the selected works in three categories. At first I will take a look at the shape of vampires, mainly focusing on their appearances and behavior and their connection to the corresponding ages. The next two chapters will concentrate on depictions of sexuality and gender, and of religion in the novels and how different treatments of these topics led to changing images of vampires. Reasons for the selection of these topics will be given in chapter two. Finally I will summarize my observations and check if the reasons for the development of the vampire, elaborated in the second chapter, are correct.
