'Brion Gysin (1916-1986) was a visual artist, historian, novelist, and experimental poet credited with the discovery of the "cut-up" technique - a collage of texts, not pictures - which his longtime collaborator William S. Burroughs put to more extensive use. Gysin is also considered one of the early innovators of sound poetry, which he defines as "getting poetry back off the page and into performance"' (rear cover blurb).

Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo., black publisher s boards lettered in gilt to spine with publisher s device to foot; top-stained grey; together in the vibrant pictorial dustwrapper featuring designs by the Moroccan artist Hamri; The BOOK essentially a near Fine copy, just one tiny bump to the corner of lower board; the near Fine WRAPPER lightly rubbed along folds, with some minor darkening to the backstrip; some dark marks affecting verso only. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. First UK edition, first printing. The British-Canadian painter, writer, sound poet, performance artist and inventor of experimental devices Brion Gysin is perhaps best known today for his collaboration on the cut up technique with William S. Burroughs. He was also the inventor (along with the computer programmer Ian Sommerville) of theDreamachine, a flickering art device which was deliberately designed to be viewed with the eyes closed. The Process was his first full-length novel, and follows the story of a pot-smoking professor named Ulys O. Hanson, who sets out on a pilgrimage across the Sahara Desert. On his travels, he is taught how to pass as a Moor, and falls in with the richest woman in creation and her seventh husband. Over the course of the novel, the reader becomes aware that what the protagonist is experiencing is a hallucination. Created using the same cut-up technique which he would later become known for, Gysin s work was celebrated for its poetic descriptions of Northern Africa, as well as the history of Sufi culture, Gysin s encounters with the founder of Scientology L. Ron Hubbard, and the Master Musicians of Jajouka, Sufi trance musicians from the mountains of Northern Morocco. Gysin had first hired the group to perform at his restaurant The 1001 Nights, which he had opened in Tangier in 1954. The author himself described the book as "a wild tale of adventure in the Sahara, on one level, and the story of a search for self, on the other. In many ways, the work was semi-autobiographical. Although set in the Sahara, the narrative is interrupted by evocations of the Canadian West in which he was born, and one of the central characters, Mya Himmer, remembers a childhood spent in Canada s open spaces. Each of the central characters in The Process is Gysin, and yet none of them is , John Geiger writes in his biography of the author. The novel is a cut-up of memory and pure invention . A very fresh copy, scarce in the wrapper. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

In den WarenkorbIntroduction by William S. Burroughs (illustrator). A fine copy in an equally fine d/j. 8vo., black boards in dust jacket; 186 pages Very scarce first edition, first printing. Brion Gysin [19161986] was a British-Canadian painter, writer, sound poet, performance artist and inventor of experimental devices. "The Last Museum" is a fantastical and nearly inaccessible last novel from Gysin, who was a friend of and collaborator with William S. Burroughs, and who here appears to be re-writing Naked Lunch. Derivative, obscure, and filled with in-jokes from another era, Burroughs said that Gysin "was the only man I ever respected." A very scarce book!.

With pleasant memories of London, all the best, William Dec. 4, 1978 [Gysin:] Yours in Present Time, Brion Gysin". This is a review copy, with the publisher's slip loosely inserted. Jonathan William was a Black Mountain College alumnus, poet, publisher, and photographer; his partner Tom Meyer was a poet and translator. In 1951, Williams founded the Jargon Society to publish the work of neglected poets. It remains one of the oldest and most esteemed small presses in the USA and has been central to the development of the literary avant-garde, publishing writers such as Charles Olson, Kenneth Patchen, Denise Levertov, and Paul Metcalf. The Exterminator comprises pieces of Burroughs's earlier writing scrambled and "thrown at the reader, or rather, sprayed at him in the same way a machinegun [sic] sprays its target" (rear cover). It is distinct from the short story Exterminator! (1973), which represents "Burroughs' induction into the mainstream and corporate publishing" (Birmingham). In contrast, The Exterminator was published by the printer-poet Dave Haselwood's Auerhahn Press, a small press responsible for publishing many of the key poets of the San Francisco Renaissance in the 1960s. In den WarenkorbFirst edition, number 14 of 90 copies signed and dated by Gysin at the foot. This is a very scarce piece of original Gysin poem-art, bringing his obsession with experimental cut-up techniques to bear upon his own name to create a quasi-incantatory scroll of nonsense. Only two copies are listed on Library Hub, one at SUNY and the other at the National Library of France. This example retains the original posting tube from Schraenen, franked in 1987 and addressed to Michael Moynihan of Cambridge, Massachusetts - very likely to be Michael Jenkins Moynihan (b.1969), the Boston-born writer, musician, and Satanist who founded the band Blood Axis, once corresponded with Charles Manson, and has published several books on fascist and occult themes. It was more recently in the collection of Julio Santo Domingo. Scroll on tracing paper (1215 x 228 mm), printed by roller in black ink. Housed in a clear plastic tube as issued. Also retaining the original cardboard delivery tube, addressed to Michael Moynihan, Cambridge, MA, USA. Fine.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, signed limited issue, number 8 of 115 copies signed by Burroughs and Gysin, this copy retaining the rare publisher's prospectus. Burroughs dedicated this book to Gysin, his friend of nearly 50 years, "My artistic and psychic debt to whom I can never repay". Gysin died later the same year, and it is likely that The Cat Inside was their final published collaboration. Burroughs, famed for his early literary accounts of drug abuse and violence, writes here of the significance of feline companionship. He drifts between memories of cats he has encountered in his life and vivid dreamscapes populated by feline creatures, with occasional asides to address foxes, dogs, and skunks. Schottlaender A58A & G1; Shoaf 78 & 29. Not in Maynard & Miles. Folio. Title vignette and 7 drawings by Brion Gysin, printed in red and black. In den WarenkorbUnbound. Zustand: Near Fine. Quarto. Headlinjed Paris and 21 May 1980, and Signed "love, Brion". Approximately 150 words. Old folds from mailing else fine, no envelope present. From Gysin to bookseller and publisher Richard Aaron. Gysin starts out discussing a job offer that would require him to leave Paris: "Wm was here when Jerry Lee Nova called from Vancouver. It seems like 6 to 8 hrs a week was a lot along with other duties. No mention was made of money but if I have to pay my transport, lodging & car there AND pay Canadian as well as French tax, French rent etc. - I'd come out a loser at $8000 (your figure) Wow!" He goes on to say: I just don't know how to quit Paris. What to do with my stuff etc. Here I have Dreamachines & a big show coming up in late September with a catalog & color reproductions. Like a launching pad from which to re-attack in the fall. I just need money to live on rather than take a huge loss on m last chocolate bar." A warm letter mentioning perhaps his best-known work (the Dreamachine) while reflecting the concerns over money and his career that plagued him during the last years of his life. A nice letter.
