Original quarter-calf binding with gilt lettering and raised bands on spine. Binding is lightly scuffed at corners, on boards, and on spine edges. Some minor spotting on boards. Endpapers marbled in maroon, yellow, blue, and cream. Page-edges also marbled, but faded. Pages are unmarked, interior is clean, and text-block stitching is tight. Some light foxing in places, and pages are slightly tanned. This volume contains encyclopedia entries for F through Herman, including longer entries on falling bodies, faraday, Florida, fermentation, flexure of beams, fireproof buildings, fortification, fluoride of aluminum and sodium, geodesy, geology, German theology, germ-theory of disease, glacier, glass, gold mines, gravity, Great Britain, William Hamilton's philosophy, harbors of American lakes, heat, heraldry, and more. Le Rationale diuinorum officiorum de Guillaume Durand l'Ancien (1230-1296), eveque de Mende, est un des ecrits religieux les plus importants du Moyen Age et incontestablement le plus important, pendant trois siecles, dans le domaine de la liturgie. La popularite immense du Rationale est attestee, entre autres, par les nombreuses copies manuscrites (plus de deux cents manuscrits sans compter quelques abreges), par cent onze editions, dont quarante pour le seul XVe siecle (et la premiere, du 6 octobre 1459, fait de l'oeuvre de l'eveque de Mende le cinquieme document imprime), enfin par des traductions en francais, allemand, espagnol, italien et anglais. Or aucune edition scientifique de cette oeuvre magistrale n'avait encore ete tentee. Les editions successives se copiaient les unes les autres et la derniere, faite chez Dura, a Naples, en 1859, a ete tres peu diffusee et reste rare. C'est, probablement, le grand nombre de manuscrits qui ont contribue a decourager les editeurs eventuels. Aussi a-t-on opte pour une edition scientifique a partir d'un petit nombre de manuscrits choisis avec soin. Les etats successifs par lesquels est passe le texte, entre 1286 et 1296, deux redactions distinctes puis des retouches successives jusqu'a la mort de l'auteur, posaient un probleme pour l'edition, et on a voulu permettre au lecteur de distinguer visuellement les passages ajoutes ou remanies par la seconde redaction. Lorsqu'il s'agit d'une simple addition, cas le plus frequent, le paragraphe (ou l'incise) nouvellement introduit est imprime en caracteres plus petits; lorsque le texte a ete remanie, les deux redactions sont imprimees cote a cote en colonnes paralleles. Mais l'originalite et l'interet principal de cette edition reside dans les deux apparats des sources et des marginalia. Le Rationale, en effet, comme tous les predecesseurs dans le domaine des commentaires sur la liturgie, est en grande partie puise aux commentaires anterieurs que l'auteur. Languages: Latin. 0 g.
