The engravings were printed on the hand presses of the Arte workshop. Hand letterpress in Caslon c. 24 is from Frequet and Baudier. The printing was completed in Paris, March 16, 1974. Our H. C. copy was one of the copies printed for the artist and is not noted in the colophon. Printed to Arches vellum and following the description of Nos. 101-175. Santa Claus is an allegorical Christmas tale in one act with five scenes. It was written by Cummings in 1946 and deals with increasing materialism and the lust for knowledge. Santa Claus and the sinister character Death exchange identities in a cynical scheme to sell shares in a worthless wheel mine. A little girl, whose innocence allows her to see through their deception, finds them out. Remorseful, Santa reveals his true identity, reaffirming his faith in love and giving, and reconciles with his estranged family. The play was inspired by Cummings' daughter Nancy, with whom he was reunited in 1946 after a bitter divorce. Alexander Calder illustrates this monumental artist's book with nine full-page etchings, whose simplified linear motifs convey the emotional power of the story. It was first published in the Harvard Wake, the Harvard University magazine in the Spring of 1946. Text in French and English. Portfolio box with light wear along edges, light fraying and chipping at three of the corners, and lightly sunned at spine and along edges. Wraps and Arches vellum paper plates in fine condition.
