Rees Howell Gronow (1794-1865) was a military man before commencing an unsuccessful parliamentary career. He wrote four works of reminiscences, this being the first; it is an entertaining work and details society in London and Paris in his time. Gronow was extremely popular and immaculately dressed, and early in life completed in many duels.With a frontispiece portrait of the subject and thirty-two illustrations by Joseph Grego. Collated, complete.With a gild emblem to the front cover of each volume. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally very smart, minor bumping to the extremities. In this set Gronow reflects on the society of London, the political landscape of Paris and the courts of Napoleon. Though the reliability of this account can be brought into question, it makes for an entertaining read. Written by Rees Howell Gronow, known as Captain Gronow. Well known for his autobiographical writing, Illustrated throughout. Collated complete. One set of plates to volume II is misbound, but is present. A interesting personal account, giving an insight into the British and French society of the 19th, albeit from the bias of the renowned dandy. In a full cloth binding, with rough cut pages. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and also to the extremities. Rubbing to the spine, joints and extremities. Light creases to the spine. The odd scratch mark to the front and rear boards.
