Re-backed, seemingly commonly so, with original spine laid in. Contemporary blue cloth with blind-stamped decorations on both boards. Titling in gilt on spine. Frontis. In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). The first two volumes of Captain Rees Howell Gronow's memoirs. In total Gronow wrote and published four volumes of his Reminiscences, and these are the first two volumes published. Volume I is illustrated, with four full page plates. Errata slip to volume I also. Russell Howell Gronow was a Welsh Grenadier Guards officer, a dandy and a writer of celebrated reminiscences. He was ensigned in 1812 and took part in several military operations. By June 1815 he was a lieutenant of his regiment. Gronow's reminiscences were extremely popular as they gave an interesting insight into his military career, the camp, the court and the clubs. Volume I also specifically references the war with France. In a quarter calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Just some minor handling marks to spines. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Prior owner's inscription to title page of volume II, H Low. Pages are slightly age toned, particularly to edges, with instances of the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed. book.
