Fourth edition in 2 volumes - Bohn's Standard Library series. xxiii, 518 pp. and a frontispiece portrait of Beckmann in volume 1; xi, 548 pp. and a frontispiece portrait of James Watt in volume 2. The second volume has 7 pages of a publisher's catalogue at both the start and end of the book, including on the endpapers. Johann Beckmann (1739-1811) was a German scientific author and coiner of the word technology, to mean the science of trades. In 1766 he was appointed extraordinary professor of philosophy at Göttingen, where he lectured on political and domestic economy. He took his students into workshops, that they might acquire a practical as well as a theoretical knowledge of different processes and handicrafts. While thus engaged he determined to trace the history and describe the existing condition of each of the arts and sciences on which he was lecturing. His 'Beiträge zur Geschichte der Erfindungen' was translated into English as the 'History of Inventions', first published in 1797. In this work he relates the origin, history and recent condition of the various machines, utensils, etc., employed in trade and for domestic purposes. For sale is the fourth English edition, in two volumes. The work has been revised and enlarged by William Francis and J.W. Griffith. The books are bound in near uniform cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spines. The cloth of volume 1 is dark blue and volume 2 is more of a greenish colour and the boards of volume 2 are about 1/8" shorter than those on volume 1. Volume 1 is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards and a small bit of damage to the cloth on the top front corner. The spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with foxing to the frontispiece. There is a thin split to the rear endpapers down the spine gutter. There is no inscription. Volume 2 is in good to very good condition with more noticeable shelf wear and some soiling and staining on the boards. There is a water stain around the bottom corners of the boards and the corners are bumped with some damage and a little loss to the cloth around the corner tips. The titling on the spine is worn and the spine ends are bumped with damage and some loss to the cloth. There is a split of about 1/2" in the cloth at the top and bottom of the front spine edge and top rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and a water stain around the bottom corner of the last page of the advertisements at the start of the book and the frontispiece and its tissue-guard. The title-page has a barely visible stain. There is no inscription. As the binding on the two volumes is slightly different and the second volume contains advertisements it is possible that, although the date on the title pages is the same, these are different printings of the fourth edition.
