The famous ancient Roman novel by Numidian author and philosopher, Lucius Apuleius. This edition was translated by Robert Graves. Back colophon: "[Signature of Robert Graves] This edition of Apuleius' Golden Ass, translated by Robert Graves, was first published in 1951. The typography and the binding were designed by Jan Tschichold. It is set in Monotype Lutetia, and printed by Silk & Terry Ltd, London and Birmingham, on Blue-White Wove paper made by Wiggins, Teape & Co, Ltd. The binding, with a marbled paper supplied by Douglas Cockerell & Son, is by James Burn & Co, London. This edition is limited to 2000 copies numbered and signed by the translator of which this is No. 640. The Transformations of Lucius, also known as the Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass, is a picaresque novel that chronicles the trials and tribulations of Lucius after he is magically transformed, by accident, into an ass. Lucius, originally a member of the Roman country aristocracy, is then forced into many situations ranging from the lamentable to the humorous to the obscene in which he often courts humiliation, death, or both. Over the course of his misadventures, Lucius sees and experiences first-hand the plight of slaves and the lower classes of Roman society. Interspersed among his story are separate tales including the Tale of Cupid and Psyche (therefore notable for being a rare instance of a fairy tale being presented in an ancient literary text). The Golden Ass is remarkable for being the only ancient Roman novel in Latin to have survived in its entirety. Signed by Author(s).

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Lucius Apuleius? The Golden Ass stands as the only complete Latin novel to survive from antiquity, offering a vivid blend of satire, mythology, eroticism, and religious transformation. Its episodic structure and fantastical tone influenced later European narrative traditions, from Renaissance romance through modern magical realism. Robert Graves? translation, first published in the mid-20th century, brought renewed literary attention to Apuleius by emphasizing narrative clarity, wit, and psychological depth. This signed Penguin limited edition reflects a moment when Penguin Books sought to bridge classical scholarship and fine press sensibility, making canonical texts both accessible and collectable. SUBJECTS: Classical Roman Literature, Latin Novels, Mythology, Cupid and Psyche, Classical Translation, Ancient Rome Limited Edition. Hardcover with dust jacket and slipcase. #1954/2000.

London, Folio Society, 1960, 208,(1) pag., coloured plates by Michale Ayrton, typeset from Ehrhardt with Columna for display, printed by Western Printing Services, the lithographs by the Curwen Press, bound by Evans of Croydon in full brown morocco leather with blind decoration to covers, gilt lettering and decoration to spine,…top edge gilt, endpapers designed in black and brown by Ayrton. = Limited edition of only 75 copies, bound in full blindtooled and gilt leather, signed by illustrator Michael Ayrton. Accordingly to Folio's most recent bibliography, during the 1950s, a number of members had expressed an interest in having the option to buy Folio books in specially bound and signed limited editions. This book was the first of Founder Charles Ede's experiments in this direction, and an extra colophon-eaf was printed, stating that 250 copies were specially bound in full brown morocco and numbered and signed by Ayrton. However, it appears that the response was disappointing, and only 75 copies were actually bound up and issued in this form. Four other 'limited editions' were published during 1960, but the response was equally poor and the experiment was repeated only intermittently before 1990, although a number of titles were offered in special bindings. Fine copy, with only a small vague imperfection on rear-panel.
