Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Books are still among the most important cultural achievements of humanity. Their invention was as important as the Internet: for the first time, a mass transfer of information became possible. Education, science, research, but also entertainment was based on a new revolutionary basis. Books are changing society until today. The technical possibilities of mass printing led to a radical increase in titles in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the conditions were still very different than today: Who wrote a book at that time, often wrote a life's work. This is reflected in the high quality of old books. Unfortunately, books age. Paper is not made for eternity. Therefore, we have made it our mission to preserve the book of knowledge of humanity and to make old books available in high quality at low prices.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by The Gemini Press in 1934. This is number 7' of the special 50 Japanese Vellum copies in the publisher s original Sangorski and Sutcliffe binding of half morocco with handmade, rose coloured paper called 'Winterstroke' Tudor Brick over the boards. Housed in the publisher s original slipcase with red morocco edging. The latter is a little rubbed and marked in places. The book is signed by both Ida Graves and Blair Hughes Stanton to the colophon as issued. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just some very light rubbing to the spine in places. Of the proposed edition of 50 special copies, it was thought that only 25-35 were originally bound as such, with the remaining 15-25 copies being bound in a different binding at a much later date by The Basilisk Press in 1980 (These copies were only signed by BHS). 23 striking full page wood engravings by Blair Hughes-Stanton. Printed in Blado italic. Tall folio. Top edge gilt. This book was the first book to be published by the Gemini Press in 1934, and celebrated the love between Ida Graves and Blair Hughes-Station who had left his wife Gertrude Hermes to join her. But Ida Graves' husband denied her a divorce. The folio pamphlet published by the Basilisk Press in 1980 'Background to the Ida Graves poems Epithalamion' describes in detail the original binding for these special copies on vellum. This pamphlet booklet accompanied the Basilisk Press reissue in 1980. A very handsome production in exceptional condition with only minor markings to the slipcase. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Author(s).

In den WarenkorbFIRST EDITION, one leaf with light crease at top corner, pp. 266, crown 8vo, original red boards, backstrip lettered in black, a few very faint spots to edges and free endpapers, the latter slightly browned in part, dustjacket with designs by Pearl Binder to front and backstrip panels, very slightly nicked and rubbed at extremities, a little waterstaining at foot of rear panel and internal tape-repair ot a couple of horizontal cracks to backstrip panel, very good. A scarce book, the author's second novel. She had earlier established herself as a poet, under the name Ida Graves, publishing volumes with the Hogarth Press and the Fortune Press, as well as working in collaboration with her then partner, the artist Blair Hughes-Stanton, with whom she had two children. By the time of this work she had met Don Nevard, a jazz pianist, with whom she would remain until her death - the novel carries a printed dedication to 'Don and the Happy Jazzmen'. The narrative-method here, in a 'story [.] about a little servant girl who brings calamity to a childless couple without meaning to', perhaps bears traces of the influence of that musical form, with a breathless style dominated by the present tense. Graves published one other novel with Faber, as well as some works for children; a long interval followed before her poetry career was revived in the 1990s.
