A treatise on the economy of the grain trade, one of the principal economic works of the 17th century. According to Van Rees, it contains "many pages whose content would have done honour to the writings of Tu…rgot or Adam Smith". The first part collects all regulations concerning the grain trade in the Netherlands from 1501 to 1634. It is printed in double columns, with the text of the regulations and Graswinckel's Latin translation. The second part contains Graswinckel's commentary on the grain trade, with marginal notes in Latin. Graswinckel (1600-66) regarded agriculture as the country's principal source of wealth. He advocated free grain trade and high prices for agricultural products, wishing export restrictions to be kept to a minimum. He also fought other obstacles to free trade, such as prohibitions on buying future harvest (pre-purchase) and on sales without immediate delivery. Also, he proved shrewdly to have understood the causes of the 17th century grain price increase, which he linked to the influx of gold and silver from the West Indies. Schumpeter notes that while Graswinckel's insights were not new in 1651, he had a better understanding of the underlying price mechanisms, and that many would place him (with his contemporary Pieter de la Court) above his English contemporaries on the basis of his liberal views on domestic and foreign trade, finding that both writers should occupy a prominent position in a history of economic thought. This copy has the Dutch title; other copies, otherwise identical, bear the Latin one. Flyleaves, half-title and final leaves slightly frayed without loss of text. - Goldsmiths' 1201. A treatise on the economics of the corn trade that ranks among the best of the scientific achievements of the Dutch in the seventeenth century. The first part is a Compilation of regulations concerning foodstuffs', all the ordinan…ces concerning the corn trade in the Netherlands from 1501 till 1634. They are printed in Dutch and Latin in double columns, with a Dutch half-title Reglementen op 't stuck van kooren ende greynen'. The second part constitutes Graswinckel's analysis of the processes involved. It is written in Dutch, with some printed annotations in Latin in the outer margins, and has a half-title Aenmerckinghen ende betrachtinghen, op de placcaten, ordonnantien, ende reglementen, &c. over 't stuck van kooren ende greynen .' ( Remarks and considerations on the regulations concerning corn and grains'). The author was one of the most prominent lawyers of his time and a strong supporter of republican government. He had assisted Grotius in Paris and acquired fame on his own account with works on public and international law. With the present treatise on the economy of the corn trade Graswinckel also established his name as an economist 'with a remarkable grasp of the subject'. Graswinckel refutes many of the mercantilist views of his time. He strongly defends the interests of the land owners and the agricultural population and argues for the free trade in corn, only in times of national destitution restrictions may be imposed. Schumpeter writes that many historians will place him (and his contemporary Pieter de la Court) 'above their English contemporaries on account of their liberal views on national and international trade . government interference, medieval corporations and so on'. Very good copy. - Theodorus Johannes "Dirk" Graswinckel (1600-1666) was a Dutch jurist, a significant writer on the freedom of the seas. He was a controversialist, who also rose to a high le…gal position (Fiscal of Holland; Advocaat-Fiscaal der Domeinen van . de Heeren Staten van Holland en West-Vriesland), where he advised Descartes. He was a cousin and pupil of Grotius. This work is published after his death expounding his political ideas clearly. Being an absolutist in the Netherlands, though not an enlightened and politicial absolutist like Burgersdijk, but on the basis of formal legalistic argument. Starting with Aristotle and contract theory he attempted to prove that the sovereign is directly appointed by God. The basis of Graswinckel's absolutism was theology, the doctrine of divine right, the absolute duty of obedience and the immutability of a God-given form of government can all be found without nuances or escape clauses.
