A history of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve form the late nineteenth century to the present day (1957), including accounts of wartime operations in the Mediterranean, the Second MTB flotilla at Hong Kong, minesweeping and mine disposal, and their role in the Fleet Air Arm. Photos include the Dieppe Raid (in which Cdr. Ian Fleming was an observer), landing craft, motor torpedo boat, commandos in France, Long-Range Desert Group liaison, submarines, etc. This copy is from the comprehensive collection assembled by Jon Gilbert (pencilled notes and signature within). This humorous piece of work was created as a result of the collaboration of three ex-military servicepeople. Eric Partridge was a lexicographer who served in the Army Education Corps and the RAF correspondence department during World War Two. Patridge edited the work. Frank Roberts contributed his knowledge of army slang and Wilfred Granville presented naval slang from their careers. This work contains a list of this slang, described as vivid, allusive and sometimes obscure. With a foreword and introduction by the editor.
