Zustand: Very good. George Grantham Bain (photographer) (illustrator). The format is approximately 7 inches by 4.625 inches. Front side is an image of an 'old time' baseball player with a large camera appearing to take a photo of action on the ball field. The other side has the following text: This photograph represents the millionth scanned and made available on the Prints and Photographs Online Catalogue. Herman A. "Germany" Schaefer, one of the most entertaining characters in baseball history, tries of the other side of the camera during the Washington Senators' visit to play the New York Highlanders in April 1911. During the early 1900s, among other celebrities and subjects in New York City and Washington, pioneering photojournalist George Grantham Bain photographed hundreds of baseball players and games. Germany Schaefer, a versatile infields and quick baserunner, played most of his career with the Detroit Tigers and the Washington Senators. the George Grantham Bain Collection in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division contains over 50,000 photographs from the first syndicated photo news service in the United States. It complements other photojournalism archives at the Library, such as the New York World Telegram & Sun Collection, the U.S. news & World Report Collection, and the Look Magazine Photograph Collection. Herman A. "Germany" Schaefer (February 4, 1876 May 16, 1919) was a second baseman, first baseman and third baseman in Major League Baseball who played 15 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators, Newark Peppers, New York Yankees, and Cleveland Indians. Schaefer was known as both a baseball trickster and a tactician in the early years of 20th century baseball. Schaefer modified his own moniker, "Germany", replacing it with "Liberty" after the United States declared war on Germany in 1917. Among Schaefer's legendary antics are diversionary tactics with umbrellas, raincoats and galoshes, to get games canceled on account of the weather. In one story he wears the outfit out onto the playing field, in another he wears it to the plate during a drizzle, but when the umpire sends him back to the dugout to take it off, the rains begin to pour, forcing the umpire to indeed call the game. George Grantham Bain (January 7, 1865 April 20, 1944) was a New York City photographer. He was known as "the father of foreign photographic news". He worked for United Press before he started the Bain News Service in 1898. The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division comprises approximately 40,000 glass plate negatives and 50,000 photographic prints. Most are scanned and have been made available online. Most date from the 1900s to the mid-1920s, but some are as early as the 1860s, and some as late as the 1930s. The Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC) contains catalog records and digital images representing a rich cross-section of still pictures held by the Prints & Photographs Division and, in some cases, other units of the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress offers broad public access to these materials as a contribution to education and scholarship. The collections of the Prints & Photographs Division include photographs, fine and popular prints and drawings, posters, and architectural and engineering drawings. While international in scope, the collections are particularly rich in materials produced in, or documenting the history of, the United States and the lives, interests and achievements of the American people. The on-line information states that it contains more than 1.2 million digitized images. This image is stated as representing 'the millionth image scanned'. Single sheet, printed on both sides Presumed First Edition, First printing thus [reprint of original 1911 photograph].
