Born in Lowestoft, England in 1857, Francis Edward Grainger was educated at Eton and then joined the Army. He soon found writing more to his liking and produced more than 60 detective novels under the pen name "Headon Hill". Incidents from his travels in India, Egypt, and the United States found their way into his fiction. He died in 1927 in Budleigh Salterton. Ink inscription on leading f.e.p. 'Happy Christmas, Ralph'. Two murders in London - one of a foreign sailor in the Monmouth Hotel, a Wapping pub and inn, and the other an American businessman in an East-End hotel - appear to be connected by the ornate hourglasses found at both scenes. Ronald Calshot, banker and protagonist, decides to investigate and is soon embroiled in the mystery. Francis Edward Grainger, 1857-1927, was a journalist and author of many popular adventure, detective, and spy stories.
