ZWART, Piet. Monografieën over filmkunst. Edited by C.J. Graadt van Roggen. 10 vols. 4to, 218 x 170 mm., bound in original illustrated wrappers in a new cloth folding box. Rotterdam: Brusse, 1931-1933. A complete set of this legendary film magazine with brilliantly designed covers by Piet Zwart. "Zwart employed images of film-strips, movie cameras, and projectors, formal devices such as multiple exposures and overprinting, and frames for slapstick comedy to documentary films. He therefore summarized the cinematic and photographic ideas that influenced avant-garde page design during the 1920s and 1930s." The series consists of: 1. Het Linnen Venster, by C.J. Graadt van Roggen; 2. Dertig Jaar Film, by L.J. Jordaan; 3. Nederlandsche Filmkunst, by Henrik Scholte; 4. Russische Filmkunst, by Th.B.F. Hoyer; 5. Duitsche Filmkunst, by Simon Koster; 6. Fransche Filmkunst, by Elisabeth de Roos; 7. Amerikaansche Filmkunst, by J. F. Otten; 8. De Absolute Film, by Menno ter Braak; 9. De Komische Film, by Constant van Wessem; 10. De Geluidsfilm, by Lou Lichtveld. Most sets have since been bound into two volumes with some trimming to the covers, the present set remains unbound thus the covers are untrimmed. The spines and edges have a bit of wear with some loss, however, rare in this state. Andel 404, 405, 406.
