Impact of irrigated agriculture in drylands. 5. Need for more rural development in Rajasthan. 6. Concluding remarks. Literature Cited. In my professional career as field biologist, I came across thousands of people with diverse background, from politicians to policy-makers, and from indigenous people to intellectuals-Harnath and Sharmishtha Jagawat do not fit into any of them. They belong to an unusual class of India's rural development practitioners. Harnath is an idealistic institutional leader, who always looks far into the future to eradicate poverty plaguing the drylands. His creativity, administrative aptitude and physical robustness brought up in the remote Chambal valley from childhood embodied with the upbeat spirit armored by his competence and genuine big-heartedness helped countless farming communities for over four decades by his tireless social work centered on irrigation water. In contrast, Sharmishtha is a down-to-earth person, who bows down to greet all humans irrespective of their age and status-from children to chief ministers, she expresses her lovely enthusiasm with genuine human touch. In this book, the author, who is Tata Visiting Chair at N M Sadguru Water and Development Foundation, highlights their enormous contributions to India's rural development eradicating poverty while revolutionizing village-level food security.…

Vegetable Farms Enhance Ecology and Livelihoods. Index. The farming system is considered sustainable only when productivity is maintained over a long period by enhancing the protection of natural resources with significant profitability to guarantee financial benefit to farmers. India leads the world in harboring the largest irrigated area.If India wants to improve sustainable farming practices and production, it must embark on new initiatives incorporating people, land and water with government, non-government and corporate support. In this book, the author, who is Tata Visiting Chair at NM Sadguru Water and Development Foundation, highlights the "Sadguru Model of Rural Development"in the Indian context, and how it promotes rural development at the grassroots while enhancing farming sustainability and food security. If the model highlighted in this book is adopted across the drylands of India and elsewhere, it would greatly increase agriculture output, guarantee food security, protect natural resources, and above all, wipe out poverty, which is the greatest insult to human dignity. This book for the first time examines the underlying causes of animal welfare problems in zoological and recreational parks throughout South East Asia and suggests scientific ways to improve professional standards. This monograph gives brief account of a variety of common problems zoos and recreational parks face in terms of ethics and welfare today. It introduces basic welfare problems and the concept of zoo assessments and how they improve welfare standards for many of the captive animals.
