Frontispiece steel engraving of the author with tissue guard plus 12 full-page captioned wood engravings with tissue guards throughout. Brown cloth stamped in blind over beveled boards with letters in gilt on the front cover and the spine and with a gilt cartouche containing the title on the front cover and elaborate gilt decorations on the spine. Wear to extremities with the corners just rubbed through, top and bottom of spine beginning to fray, spine gilt slightly dulled, cover gilt bright, all engravings present and in fine condition with all tissue guards intact, previous owner's signature (John L. Scudder, Dec 22, 1881)--all in all in extraordinary condition for a book so old and fragile. John Bartholomew Gough [1817-1886] was a one time bookbinder and alcoholic, who, under the influence of a kindly Quaker, took the Temperance pledge and spent most of the remainder of his life speaking on temperance in the United States and England, attracting thousands to hear his eloquent speeches. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with small piece cut away from one corner, and traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse, which also carries a few marks in ink, with a couple of minor marks in the margin at the foot of the recto. At the head of the page is the engraving, roughly 12.5 x 12 cm, attractively done, and showing Gough in cutaway jacket and waistcoat, standing behind a table, with a seated audience behind him, holding aloft a glass of water. The text consists of 19 lines in small type, beginning: 'This is the liquor which God, the Eternal brews for his children - not in the simmering still, over smoky fires, choked with poisonous gases, and surrounded with a stench of sickening odours and rank corruptions [.]'. It concludes: 'Speak out, my friends, would you exchange it for DEMON'S DRINK - ALCOHOL?' Tisdall does not feature in BBTI, and COPAC has no record of any publication by him. Possibly dating from Gough's 1853 visit to England, at the invitation of the London Temperance League, when he was entertained by the artist George Cruikshank. He asks Nichol to 'find space for the enclosed letter in the Gentleman's Magazine'. He is 'acquainted with the pedigree in question', but does not think that 'Sir Bernard Burke's statements are in all cases to bee relied upon'. The letter continues: 'I do not know whether you are in Mr Potter's secrets. His first volume, so long looked for, seems no nearer publication now than it was when first announced.' Thompson has 'received applications to undertake the republication' of Nichols's 'grandfather's work' [John Nichols (1745-1826)], but has 'several times declined to do so'. He concludes: 'It would be well if Mr Potter brought out a volume or part, if he wishes to retain the good wishes of his subscribers'.…
