"This diary of exactly 100 days was kept for a close friend, a conscientious objector, who in 1942 lost his appeal against military service and was sent to Shannon Detention Camp in the North Island for the duration of the war. It was intended to keep him in touch with happenings at Canterbury College where we both had been students for a few years. Each day was written up by hand and instalments of about ten days were then typed out and mailed to Shannon." - from the Foreword, page 5.

"As memory serves, the famous Wirths Circus paid two visits to my home town of Balclutha during my boyhood in the 1920s. It came by rail and appraently stayed just the one dramatic day. On both occasions the big top and its attendant menagerie tent were set up in vacant paddocks near our back-street house, once indeed almost directly across the road. The following reminiscences may have some subject interest outside its tentative story form. It was written fairly close to the event - about 1938 - and one or two emendations have been made for this belated printing." - page 7. Nag's Head Press checklist item #107.

"The whole series of 10 Barnego books was in part a satire of local histories, but was also a hand press publishing entertainment for Gormack and the enthusiastic collectors of such material [. . .] Part two has more than a few digs at Roger Duff and earlier scholars who wrote about moa." - Wikipedia entry on "The Centennial History of Barnego Flat Part Two", accessed December 2022.
