Erstausgabe
Hardcover. First Edition. London, Cassell and Company, 1939. Octavo, xvi, 51 pages plus 15 colour lithographs (one double-page). Pictorial papered boards (printed in red and black) lightly bumped on the top edge of both covers, with the rear cover slightly marked; flyleaves offset; top edge of the text block and the top half-inch of the leading edge stained, bleeding lightly and very slightly into the margins, and really only noticeable on the leading edge, the flyleaves and the half-title; notwithstanding, a pleasing copy of a very attractive and uncommon book 'about the pubs of London'.

First edition, sole impression. "Ardizonne's illustrations are generally concerned with contemporary life untouched by political, religious or ideological conflicts. His approach is not satiric or moralistic but autobiographical, and his drawings are representational and humourous and demonstrate his affection for people" (The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators). The book's scarcity is explained by Maurice Gorham in his Foreword to their follow-up book Back to the Local (1949): "[The Local's] career ended when unsold copies, sheets, and plates of the drawings went up together in the burning of Cassells' premises in Belle Sauvage Yard [during the Blitz]". Octavo. Original grey boards, titles to spine and front cover in red and black. With the original glassine dust jacket with paper flaps, as issued. With 15 four-colour lithographic plates, including one double-page by Edward Ardizzone. Some faint toning to boards; an exceptional copy in the scarce dust jacket, with partial loss to panels and spine at head and foot.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by Cassell, London in 1939. The BOOK is in Very Good ++ condition. Original two-colour printed paper boards are lightly marked. The spine is missing as invariably is the case with this title due to the restrictions on quality of war time production. The boards are however firmly attached and the book is tight. Free from inscriptions and the pages are clean. Frontispiece, title-page, xvi ~+ 51 pages, with all 14 other illustrations (including one double-page spread) in very good condition. The Ardizzone illustrations, printed at the Curwen Press in stunning chromolithography, retain their vitality. Among the named pubs illustrated are the 'Spread Eagle' in Thame, the 'Warrington' in Maida Vale, the 'Red Lion' at Barnes, the 'Goat' just off Bond Street. The text, together with the 'Glossary of Terms' commonly used in connection with the London Pubs, remain a wonderful insight and are added to by the wonderful Ardizzone lithos. A very rare title to find in any collectable condition. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Erstausgabe
First edition. Royal octavo. 50 pages. 14 full-page colour lithographs, 1 double-page colour lithograph and cover design by Edward Ardizzone. The first 8 lithographs are tipped-in, the remainder being on cognate leaves. All the lithographs have captions in cursive script by Edward Ardizzone. Pictorial boards. Printed at the Curwen Press. According to Alderson, the unsold stock was destroyed when Cassell's premises in Belle Sauvage Yard were burnt to the ground.Head and tail of spine scuffed. Corners of covers a bit rubbed. Very good in the remains of the cellophane dustwrapper but with the printed paper flaps present. These are crinkled, as seems to be a common problem with these ''transmatic'' dustwrapper. It is sometimes stated that the book was issued without a dustwrapper, which goes to show how seldom it is present.
