Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Author not known -- perhaps Richard Bentley. Bound in full leather, but both boards detached (and present). With blindstamped decorations on covers, raised cords on the spine. 19th century bookplate on inside front cover. 149 pages + ads. A full page engraved portrait of Stillingfleet for frontispiece. Nice clean white pages, without foxing. Rear free endpaper is missing. Edward Stillingfleet, 1635- 1699, bishop of Worcester. "His literary and controversial activity was prodigious, and his books against the Socinians and Romanists were extremely popular. On 4 May 1677 he was made archdeacon of London, and on 16 Jan. 1678 dean of St. Paul's. He was also prolocutor of the lower house of the convocation of Canterbury. He was no less prolific as an antiquary than as a theologian. His treatise on the jurisdiction of the bishops in capital cases, published on the occasion of Danby's trial, was considered, says Burnet, to "put an end to the controversy in the opinion of all impartial men" (Hist. of his own Time, 1753, ii. 93). Still more important was his elaborate work the "Origines Britannic" 1685, which was an acute historical investigation of the sources of British church history. His "Discourse of the True Antiquity of London" (published after his death) shows him also an antiquary of wide learning. He was a great book collector, and formed a very large library of manuscripts and rare works." This copy in good clean condition. Feel free to e-mail with questions, or if you'd like to see a photo.

From the library of Michael Lilienthal with his engraved bookplate. 19,5 x 12,5 cm. *Interesting collection of ten english tracts printed 1712-1714, some of them relating to The Deist Controversy and several of them rare. Philosopher Anthony Collins (1676-1729) was a friend of John Locke and his influential Discourse of Freethinking is here in it's first edition, the repaired title page should be noted, but is neatly done and in a contemporary hand. The work of antiquary John Pointer (1668-1754) on the Roman pavement in Stonesfield, with the plate depicting Bacchus, is of importance as the pavement was destroyed already in 1724. Bookseller and author of many curious titles John Dunton (1659-1733) is perhaps best known as founder of The Athenian Society in 1691 and as publisher of the periodical The Athenian Mercury. Michael Lilienthal (1686-1750) was a german theologian, librarian, numismatist, publicist, and professor at the university of Rostock. His bookplate in this sammelband bears also the signature of his son Theodor Christoph Lilienthal (1717-1781). [#\139952].
