Internally fine; presentation plate and date 1929 to paste down [which may be the date of the binding]; all edges gilt. A most handsome copy of these famous works in lovely condition and with some fine illustrations.

A few marks to lower board, otherwise fine, the binding bright, sharp and square, the boards unbowed. The publisher produced a number of these de luxe gilded editions at the beginning of the nineteenth century, either in a fine pale blue or green cloth or (less commonly) in white vellum. The vellum copies are often found with the boards bowed or warped, but this example is quite unaffected.

Illustrated with 25 colour illustrations by Charles Brock, who is most known for his Regency style illustrations for the novels of Jane Austen. Uncut and with top edge gilt. A few light marks to rear board and bumped lower corners. Endpapers toned and a few spots to prelims but otherwise very clean internally. The book follows the lives of the virtuous but modest Primrose family headed by the vicar and narrator of the story, Charles Primrose. It was one of the most widely read novels of the 18th century in England. A near fine copy. 8vo.
