In den WarenkorbZustand: Gut. 182 S. / p. Altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand, unbeschnitten / very good condition for age, uncut - This collection of skillfully executed essays, like those in Dr. Bergins Perspectives on the Divine Comedy, is based primarily on the literal narrative of the Comedy. The essays range in tone from the belletristic to the scholarly, yet none is beyond the grasp of the general reader of Dante. The point of this collection is to stress the many aspects of the poem, thus suggesting the numerous levels of appeal in reflection of the totality of Dantes vision of humanity. -- Following a neatly-turned introductory chapter - Concerning a Greek Princess, a Florentine Jokester, and the Uses of Diversity - Dr. Bergin presents a brief synthesis of the letter and spirit of the Cotnedy. He then outlines Dantes Hell in topographic and demographic terms. The role of the inferior sex, put in its proper medieval place, is traced in a number of Dantes female characters, particularly those two who loved too much, Francesca and Cunizza. Bergin explores the influence of Provençal poets on Dante through their appearances in the poem. He analyzes in detail the text of the ninth canto of the Paradiso. The final chapter examines Dantes visit to Mars for certain tan-genital reflections that illuminate the whole of the Comedy. -- Among Dr. Bergins many publications, besides Perspectives on the Divine Comedy, are an Anthology of Provençal Troubadours ( with R. T. Hill ) , Dante ( a study of the poets times, life, and work ) , translations of The New Science of Giambattista Vico ( with M. Fisch ) , Machiavellis The Prince, and Sonnets of Petrarch. His Concordance to the Divine Comedy ( with E. H. Wilkins ) , published for the Dante Society of America, received a prize from the Italian government. He was Professor of Romance Languages and Curator of the Dante and Petrarch Collections at Cornell from 1941 to 1948, except for three years spent as Director of Public Relations with the Allied Commission in Italy. Since 1948 he has taught at Yale, where for many years he served as Master of Timothy Dwight College. He has been Sterling Professor of Romance Languages at the University since 1957, and is currently working on a revision of his translation of the Divine Comedy, among other projects.
