Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Schon bei seinem ersten Erscheinen im Jahr 1912 war 'Ostpreußische Sagen' ein modernes Buch, das die alten Sagen und Legenden in sprachlich neuer Form und in zeitgemäßer Ausstattung bot. Diese Ausgabe ist heute kaum noch auffindbar. Hundert Jahre nach ihrem Erscheinen wurde sie jetzt als anspruchsvolles Faksimile wieder verfügbar gemacht. Beigegeben ist ein akzentuiertes Lebensbild des damaligen Verfassers, des Germanisten Hermann Jantzen. Der leitende Beamte einer Schulaufsichtsbehörde und pädagogisch modern gesonnene Mitgestalter der Mädchenschulreform hatte es zu einem Zeitpunkt herausgebracht, als er bereits verschiedene Schulausgaben und Lesebücher, aber auch germanistische Handbücher (Sammlung Göschen) und pädagogische Schriften veröffentlicht hatte. Etwa zur gleichen Zeit wurde ihm der Rote Adler-Orden verliehen. Wie seinem Vorwort entnommen werden kann, bezweckte er mit dem Buch die Stärkung der Heimatverbundenheit der Leser. Zugleich hat wohl der Gedanke mitgeschwungen, die Sagenwelt Ostpreußens bekannter zu machen. Im Vergleich mit den für viele Gegenden zusammengetragenen Sagensammlungen des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts wurde hier das Ziel verfolgt, eine gute Auswahl zu bringen. War bei der von Hermann Jantzen verwendeten Vorlage, Tettaus Volkssagen Ostpreußens, Litthauens und Westpreu-ßens aus dem Jahre 1837, noch eine Menge enthalten, das eher dem Gebiet der Geschichtslegenden zuzuschlagen wäre, so liegt in unserem Buch der Schwerpunkt erkennbar auf sagen- und märchenhaften Anekdoten, in denen oft etwas Seltsames und fast immer etwas Bemerkenswertes geschieht. Hermann Jantzens Neufassungen haben sprachlich und erzähltechnisch gewonnen. Das Buch ist bibliophil mit festem Einband ausgestattet, das beigegebene Lebensbild erklärt den beruflichen und familiären Hintergrund Hermann Jantzens und seiner Frau und ordnet das Buch in den Kontext einer Zeit und einer Landschaft ein, die von uns durch zwei Weltkriege und ein volles Jahrhundert getrennt, aber in der Erinnerung trotzdem noch lebendig ist.
