8vo. pp. 460. 26 illus. & 28 maps (2 on endpapers). cloth. A very good copy in tattered dw. First Edition. Offered with a small photo of Glubb, 2 ALS & 1 TLS from Glubb, dated Mayfield, UK, Sept. 29 and Oct. 23, 1959, and Dec. 31, 1960 to Dr. A.D.Tushingham, Head of the Division of Art & Archaeology at the Royal Ontario Museum, and a copy of a letter sent from Tushingham to Glubb, dated Oct. 20, 1959. In the typed letter of Sept. 29, Glubb thanks Tushingham for his hospitality on a recent visit to Toronto. It reads in part: "It was also a great pleaure to find someone who could talk about Jordan and the Jordanians, who are, as I am sure that you will appreciate, still very near to my heart. Even apart from personal considerations, one cannot avoid being anxious at the general ignorance and indifference in the West towards these countries which are of such vital strategic importance and where the Russians are working so hard." The rest of the letter and the other correspondence largely concern a proposed lecture tour by Glubb to Canada. Lieutenant-General Sir John Bagot Glubb (1897-1986), known as Glubb Pasha, was a British soldier, scholar, and author, who led and trained Transjordan's Arab Legion (later known as the Jordan Royal Army) between 1939 and 1956 as its commanding general. During this period, 'he transformed the Legion into the best-trained force in the Arab world. He was dismissed from his post by King Hussein in the face of criticism by Jordan nationalists and other Arab states.

First editions, each signed and dated by the author on the title page, including first impressions of Story and Life and Times and a second impression of Soldier with the Arabs. These three studies by the famous leader of the Arab Legion demonstrate the unique perspective he gained in the field. Each copy was signed in 1971. As he states in the preface to Life and Times, "until I was fifty-nine years old, my life was spent, mostly out-of-doors, in practical activities in the Arab countries. It was beyond my powers to begin at sixty and overtake the scholars whose whole lives have been dedicated to learning" (p. 9). Taken together, the three works provide highly personal accounts of life in the Arab Legion, the history of Transjordan until Glubb's dismissal by King Hussein, and the Islamic faith. "My greatest wish for this book is that it may convey to my fellow countrymen, who, less fortunate than myself, have not had the opportunity to meet the Arabs at first hand, some slight idea of the charm, the courage and the humour of this great people" (p. 10). Three works, octavo. Original yellow, blue, or black cloth, gilt lettering to spines and front covers. Story of the Arab Legion and Life and Times of Muhammad with dust jackets, rear panel and flap of Soldier with the Arabs dust jacket loosely inserted. Each work illustrated throughout with photographic plates and maps, Story of the Arab Legion with photographic frontispiece depicting the author, A Soldier with the Arabs with photographic frontispiece depicting King 'Abd Allah of Jordan. Edges and endpapers slightly foxed, pages of Arab Legion jacket toned; jackets unclipped, Muhammad somewhat sunned at spine, The Story with short closed tears: very good copies in very good and good jackets.

Zustand: Fine (old fold to typescript). Typescript published in: Into Battle. A Soldier's Diary of the Great War (Cassell, 1978). Ink on letterhead, 3 pp. Typescript carbon, 12 pp., with a small ink sketch map and occasional annotations. Photograph: copy of portrait, with studio stamp of Paul Laib. 1 vols. 4to. Nice late letter in a bold hand from Glubb Pasha, Sir John Bagot Glubb (1897-1986), who served with distinction in France in the first world war, and was thrice wounded. Glubb's long career in the Middle East began with a posting to Mesopotamia in 1920, and in 1930 he joined the Arab Legion in Transjordan (now Jordan), where he organized a remarkable fighting force from Bedouin tribesmen. Glubb was appointed commander of the Arab Legion in 1939. "His contribution to the capture of Baghdad in 1941 and the subsequent capture of the desert fortress of Palmyra in Syria was decisive, for it denied the eastern flank of the Middle East to Hitler" (ODNB). In 1948 Glubb led the troops of the Arab Legion across the Jordan to occupy the West Bank, under the terms of the United Nations resolution for the partition of Palestine and in the face of military resistance. Glubb was dismissed by King Hussein in 1956 and "was not awarded a general's pension by either Britain or Jordan. He was appointed KCB (1956) on his arrival and thereafter the British government washed its hands of him" In his retirment, he wrote and lectured, chiefly on Middle Eastern subjects. This letter conveys a portrait and typescript chapter from Into Battle (1978) to a Yugolsav correspondent; and writes (in part) "I am working on a book called The Rise and Decline of Nations. It is intended to give a very short summary of the rise and fall of eleven nations . the remarkable similarity between them all is discussed" Glubb names eleven political empires from ancient Egypt through the British Empire. The topic seems a reprise of his ideas in The Course of Empire. The Arabs and Their Successors (1965). Ink on letterhead, 3 pp. Typescript carbon, 12 pp., with a small ink sketch map and occasional annotations.
