Erstausgabe
First appearance in print of the text of Glubb Pasha's outspoken 1959 Royal Central Asian Society anniversary lecture, in which he calls for a change in British mentalities vis-à-vis the Middle East, from using force to winning hearts and minds. "If only we could bring that off I believe we could again win the friendship of the Arab people and that we and they really could once again work happily and enthusiastically together" (pp. 240-1). Speaking in the aftermath of the Suez Crisis, Glubb (1897-1986) points to the rise of a new educated and politically conscious generation in the Middle East that views Britain and other western powers as merely the bastions of an old colonial order. "It is only necessary, it seems to me, to make a small adjustment, to give up a superior manner, and yet it is an adjustment which is difficult to make because we are so used to another system" (p. 237). He argues that Britain should use the power of the press and new media to lay out a respectful vision of global equality sans paternal overtones. It is this, not Whitehall's agonizing over which emerging leaders and political factions to support, that must occupy politicians and civil servants going forward. Given Glubb's forthright criticisms, the journal's editor felt compelled to add a reminder at the end of his remarks that he did not speak on behalf of the society. Large octavo, pp. 232-41 within the journal. Original red card wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black. A near-fine copy with light creasing to wrappers.

Erstausgabe
First appearance in print of this account by Glubb Pasha, commander of the Arab Legion, of his wartime service in the Middle East, including leading forces in the invasion of Iraq. "His contribution to the capture of Baghdad in 1941 and the subsequent capture of the desert fortress of Palmyra in Syria was decisive, for it denied the eastern flank of the Middle East to Hitler" (ODNB). Speaking to the Royal Central Asian Society on 9 October 1944, Glubb (1897-1986) stresses the contribution of Abdullah I and the Arab Legion to rescuing the situation in the Middle East in 1940-1, when "almost every Arab. was convinced that these were just the last stages before the British collapse" (p. 25). He sees the secret of Transjordan's success in its centralized government, relative lack of class distinctions, and the sagacious rule of Abdullah himself - all lessons that he hopes British policymakers will apply to their dealings with the broader region. Large octavo, pp. 24-33 within the journal. Original red card wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black. Wrappers lightly soiled, creasing to covers and contents. A very good copy indeed.

Unpublished typescript of an academic paper on Arab military history by Sir John Bagot Glubb, which he read at a symposium held at the University of Texas in 1965. The paper was subsequently revised and published with significant differences in a volume entitled The Conflict of Traditionalism and Modernism in the Muslim Middle East (Austin, 1966). Glubb, also known as Glubb Pasha and Abu Hunayk ("Possessor of the Little Jaw"), played an important role in modern Jordanian history, becoming commander of the Arab Legion in 1939. During the Second World War, he led campaigns in Iraq and Syria. In 1949 he was placed in charge of the defence of the West Bank. He remained a close friend of King Hussein of Jordan, even after leaving the Legion. 23 typewritten leaves on mid-weight paper, measuring 280 x 215 mm and typed on one side, wire-stitched with a single staple. First leaf heavily toned with ink faded, subsequent leaves brighter but still toned at edges, last leaf detached. A good copy.
