He is best known for his bestselling nonfiction books "Lions of Medina", "Swift Sword" and for sculpting the Texas Medal of Honor Memorial and the Kentucky Medal of Honor Memorial. Glass began writing and sculpting following a career as a criminal prosecutor in Texas and Kentucky. Inspired by the heroes honored by memorials and by Lon Tinkle's account of the Battle of the Alamo that he had read many years before, Glass authored two nonfiction books about the men who fought in the Vietnam War. His first book, Lions of Medina, was so successful and personally rewarding that he embarked on a career as a full-time writer. Based on personal interviews Glass conducted with survivors of Operation Medina, a military operation conducted by the Marine Corps in the Hai Lang National Forest of South Vietnam, the book was published by Coleche Press in 2007 and by NAL Caliber Penguin in 2008. Medal of Honor recipient William T. Perkins is featured prominently in the work. His second book, Swift Sword, based on personal interviews of nearly fifty survivors of Operation Swift, recounts, in the words of the men themselves, a harrowing fight for survival by Marines on a lone knoll in Vietnam's Que Son Valley. The heroic acts of Medal of Honor recipients Father Vincent R. Capodanno and Lawrence Peters, along with countless other heroes, are told. Isolated and under attack by more than two North Vietnamese Battalions, Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines (M Co. 3/5) fought for its life with an unreliable rifle, the M-16. Only the courage of the individual Marines, marvelous Close Air Support, and a heroic helicopter drop of tear gas on their position stalled the NVA assault. Deep in the heart of the Queson Valley, the 2nd North Vietnamese Army Division (2nd NVA Division) decided for the first time to fight all Marine forces at once. They placed three Infantry regiments to intercept any American reinforcements to the two 1st Battalion 5th Marine (1/5) Companies surrounded and under intense fire. The 5th Marines, with limited forces, attempted to reinforce their beleaguered companies and marry up in the Queson Valley with 2 companies from 3/5. Before reaching 1/5 location, M Co moved on a small cemetery knoll. Two NVA Battalions smothered them from the flanks. Surrounded and isolated from other Marine forces, M Co. fought for their lives against overwhelming forces. The 5th Marines, stretched so thin they had only two Infantry Companies out of twelve available, were drawn into battle by the entire 2nd NVA Division of 6500 troops and all the local guerrilla forces in the Quesons. In dust jackets which are torn in half (front dj flap of volume II detached as well). The jacket of volume II is missing the spine. Frontispieces of John D. Lee and Mountain Meadows. Brooks' monumental two volume work on the diaries of John D. Lee, which derived from her earlier work on the Mountain Meadows Massacre, and led to her later full blown biography on Lee. Volume I has been inscribed by both Cleland and Brooks: "Inscribed, with sincere appreciation, to ______ by Robert G. Cleland, December 7, 1955"; "Concurred in most heartily- Juanita Brooks, Sept. 24, 1958." Tucked in, is a letter addressed to Mrs. Winifred Gregory and Eleanor Towler from editor Robert G. Cleland on his letterhead. In the letter, Cleland thanks the women for helping in the publication of these journals. He closes the letter playfully, by signing it "Jno D. Lee, Aggatha Ann, Old Mrs. Woolsey, et al." Also tucked in- a photo of John D. Lee's grave, and an estimate, on University of New Mexico letterhead (5/10/76), of the cost involved in publishing 3 volumes of Lee's Diaries.
