The purpose of the series is to review new work in rapidly changing fields. We do not expect reviews to cover the whole field of work on alcoholism and… addiction. Our reviews are designed to explore only the most exciting parts of the total field and to focus on conclusions that can be made about them. The series publishes one volume each year. Volume 8 is an omnibus rather than a theme volume in that a wide range of topics is covered, including research on alcohol, opiates, and tobacco. As usual, the greater emphasis is on alcohol research, reflecting the importance of the problem and the volume of work to be reviewed. With Volume 8 come some changes in the Editorial Board. It will be the last volume in the series for Robert E. Popham who has resigned from the Board. He has been with the series since its inception and has contributed a great deal to its development. In den WarenkorbThe first article in this volume presents the current list of the Austrian ant fauna. In addition to the distribution of species across the individual federal states, additional ecological assessments are cited. At present 31 genera with 133 wild species and additionally ten known only from buildings are known from Austria. Evid…ence of seven other species is questionable. As all nomenclatural changes of recent years have been taken into account, there is a reference book, on which further research of the domestic ant fauna can be built. The second article deals with the oribatid fauna (moss mites of beetle mites) of Austria, whose representatives are distributed among 198 genera and 79 families. Taking into account species potentially to be recovered that are currently not clearly delineated, as well as newly described species, there are currently 623 valid taxa (606 species and 17 subspecies or forms). Of these, 26 species reports are still unpublished; they represent the first evidence for Austria. The research status of the oribatid mite fauna shows strong regional differences future investigations are expected to therefore increase the number of species significantly. Im ersten Beitrag dieses Bandes wird die aktuelle Liste der österreichischen Ameisenfauna vorgestellt. Neben der Verteilung der Arten über die einzelnen Bundesländer werden zusätzlich auch ökologische Einschätzungen angeführt. Derzeit sind aus Österreich 31 Gattungen mit 133 freilebenden Arten und zusätzlich zehn nur aus Gebäuden bekannten Ameisenarten gesichert nachgewiesen. Nachweise von sieben weiteren Arten sind fraglich. Da alle nomenklatorischen Änderungen der letzten Jahre berücksichtigt wurden, liegt ein Nachschlagewerk vor, auf dem die weitere Erforschung der heimischen Ameisenfauna aufbauen kann. Der zweite Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Oribatiden-Fauna (Horn- oder Moosmilben) Österreichs, deren Vertreter sich auf 198 Gattungen und 79 Familien verteilen. Unter Berücksichtigung potentiell einzuziehender, zurzeit nicht klar abgrenzbarer sowie neu zu beschreibender Arten verbleiben aktuell 623 valide Taxa (606 Arten und 17 Unterarten bzw. formae). Davon sind 26 Artmeldungen noch unpubliziert; sie stellen Erstnachweise für Österreich dar. Again the editorial board has changed. After several years of service, Reginald G. Smart has stepped down. New to the board are Helen M. Annis, Michael S. Goodstadt, Lynn T. Kozlowski, and Evelyn R. Vingilis. This is likely to be the sole volume for which Goodstadt is on the board, since before completion of this volume he moved from the Addiction Research Foundation to the Center for Alcohol Studies, Rutgers University.

Very uncommon publication from 1968 which contains a bounty of American trademarked logos from the heyday of the post-war graphic design and advertising boon. In Black cardboard slipcase foil-stamped in white, with a 56 page booklet, 16 sheets that fold out to 4 panels, and 45 single panel sheets.… An amazing document in a visually compelling format. This copy generally very nice, with some heavier wear to the slipcase, but the inner contents are in excellent, superb, crisp condition, appears scarcely looked through at all. The case itself, thought still intact, is a bit wobbly, and is missing about 1" of one of the sides, and what remains on both sides is slightly curled and peeled up form the joining cardboard underneath, leaving it a bit precarious as is (could likely be fixed up easily with PVA glue and happy to do that for anyone interested). Some further fraying at the sides and some light rubbing to covers besdes. As mentioned, all interior contents are nearly as new, remarkably so given the age. Booklet has some minor toning around edges of the back cover, and one or two of the sheets has the slightest bit of corner wear, but generally superb. Lester Beall [essay] Chicago: Society of Typographic Arts (STA), June 1968. First [only] edition. Black cardboard slipcase foil-stamped in white. [16] 4-panel sheets, 25 loose sheets, and a 56-page booklet enclosed in the slipcase. Contents lightly handled. The Publishers slipcase is split along the lower front edge and worn along each edge, with tape repair to case bottom and bumps to corners. Nearly fine contents in a fair to good example of the Publishers slipcase. Rare. Black slipcase contains 16 [8.5" x 8.5"] 4-panel sheets, 25 [8.5" x 8.5"] loose sheets and a 56-page [8.5" x 8.5"] perfect-bound booklet. From the introduction: "193 American trademarks, symbols and logotypes were chosen by a jury of leaders in the field of design to be represented in Trademarks/USA, the first national retrospective exhibition of its kind, which opened April 22, 1964 at the National Design Center in Marina City, Chicago, under the auspices of the Society of Typographic Arts." An amazing document that chronicles the rise of the American trademark after World War II, and by extension the graphic design profession as well. Essays include the introduction for "Trademarks/USA" including the President's Message and 5 b/w photos of jury members, an essay called The Trademark: A Graphic Summation of Individuality by Lester Beall including 5 b/w photos of the exhibition.
