Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Anglo-Swiss Colo-Proctology Meeting, held at Lausanne in May 1983, enabled numerous specialists to share their experiences of lower gastrointestinal tract pathology. The focus was on ischae mic disease and tumours of the colon, rectum and anus. By featuring ischaemic disease in our programme we hoped to give this too often underestimated process a fair hearing. Ischaemic lesions are far more common than is recognised on clinical grounds alone, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. Large intestine is chaemia is often confused with other syndromes, especially since the clinical features evoked are, in most cases, atypical. Thus diag nosis is frequently late, with dramatic consequences. The oncology section basically discusses the early diagnosis of gastrointestinal tumours, a prerequisite for improving survival in af fected patients, and also presentation and treatment of certain rare tumours. The third section of this volume covers various diverse subjects including surgical technique, functional disorders of the large intes tine, inflammatory bowel disease, haemorrhoids and investigatory procedures. Several of the articles come from international authorities in their field. Some communications contain unpublished results, and others may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. We feel that the quality and variety of the texts from the Anglo-Swiss Colo Proctology Meeting merit wide appreciation. We are grateful to Springer-Verlag for accepting these proceed ings for publication.

The book contains the papers which were presented and dis cussed there by physicians of the various specialties concerned with the care of patients with diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. The authors, each distinguished in a particular field, have contributed across a wide range of subjects and different dis ciplines. The topics covered include surgical and investigative techniques, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and specific infections. Being familiar with the previous literature, it is clear that little was really new among the themes presented in St Moritz, but few will deny that many of the techniques and methods of treatment described in this book are truly modern. Some contribute an entirely new dimension to the approach to well known colo-proctological conditions, while others may open up new paths for future research. In addition, in colo-proctology as in other disciplines, advances in treatment almost always bring new problems in the complications which attend them. These are the subject of some of the papers. As a surgeon, the lack of information was particularly frustrating, and this is why I de cided to edit a text covering the different aspects of thymic pathology, surgery, and prognosis. It is always difficult to strike a balance between what is to be included and left out of a book about a subject intended for readers of different specialities. This one was written primarily to provide valuable information to surgeons on most aspects related to thymic surgery and to other specialists who are often confront ed with thymic diseases. Written by leaders in their respective fields, I hope it will provide an excellent reference for those interested in an up-to-date synthesis of general knowledge of such highly specialized areas as immunology, pathology, and neuroscience. The opening chapters on clinical management provide a historical review and descriptions of the normal thymus and surgical pathology. Later chapters review the various diseases related to the surgical pathology of the thymus. Investiga tions, surgical procedures, and other therapeutic modalities are also extensively covered. The book closes with chapters on the postoperative evolution of myas thenia gravis and thymic tumors, as well as on the effect of thymectomy in hu man oncogenesis.
