Plantation crops have been traditional export earners but their importance declined when industrial and engineering goods become major export products. Interest in them was revived through new technology and marketing methods. Plantation crop development is another way of containing the environmental deterioration caused by the modern agro-systems. Plantation and forestry could go hand in hand and could develop what is called a forestry-plantation system: Plantation development if it is in wasteland, could propagate mixed crop species along with soil conservation and linkage with other sectors thus improving the role of plantation crops. Thous coconut and arecanut are classified as palms, an attempt is made in this study to include them and study some other plantation crops like cashewnut to the development of agricultural and the rural sector in the particular region. The study is divided into two parts- Part I comprising coconut-arecanut and Part II Cashewnut. (jacket).
Hardcover. Zustand: New. A major reason for decline in fish productivity has been overcrowding of mechanized crafts and absence of extension of exploitable zone. Effective inland water fisheries through aquaculture and pisciculture could supplement the marine catch but the total catch would be far less then demand. This book attempts to evaluate marine fisheries and aquaculture and the role of institutions and the actors in sustaining the required fish productivity level. The papers include economics of mechanized and non-mechanised boats in Pondicherry and Karnataka, marine fishermen cooperatives in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. Though there are other areas to cover, the papers make an attempt in presenting information which otherwise is lacking in the growing field of fisheries and its impact on rural development.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction to rural development. 2. Banking industry. 3. International banking. 4. Banking performance and indicators. 5. Rural banking: a case study. 6. Conclusion. References. Index.Development of the rural areas has been the major focus of growth in the third world countries since long and India is no exception to this. However, owing to varied development approaches the aim of achieving a speedier growth in rural sector has been beset with many a bottleneck. Rural development is basically a micro approach, which has to be entwined with macro objective depending on the micro perspectives. This study dwells on a micro region, how different rural development programmes are being financed by the local branches of commercial and cooperative banks, by considering region-wise and sector-wise total deposits, advances, recovery and loan outstanding. Apart from crop cultivation, minor irrigation and land development, the other programmes considered refer to small scale industries and other priority and non-priority sectors. Special emphasis is laid on programmes like IRDP and PMRY whose shares show a very low level, indicating the need for spreading up of assistance in many rural development schemes. Besides, the macro analysis of commercial banks provides their varies levels of performance in terms of several indicators. While the contribution of private banks and foreign banks has been showing a slow growth in this liberalization era, the public sector banks dominate the current banking scenario in the country. However, their performance is subject to fluctuations as and when policy changes are being made and a steady growth pattern in term is yet to be realized in full. Further, some of the efficiency indicators become volatile during some years indicating a greater role for risk management, necessitating both intensification (within the country) and extension (outside the country) with better performance so as to be locally as well globally competitive. This book will be of special interest to bankers and policy makers in delineating the relative contribution of various commercial and cooperative banks at the local level and how branch specification as to the policy prescription and activity will opt for an appropriate matching process between various rural development programmes and institutional build-up process. 170 pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. Contents: 1. Agricultural Development. 2. An Analysis of Size of Operational Holdings. 3. Forestry in Economic Development. 4. Sericulture Development. 5. A Study of Mechanised Boats. 6. Sugarcane Supply to D K Cooperative Sugar Factory. 7. Evaluation of Self-Employment Scheme. 8. Rural Development in a Micro-region. This study takes up the case of a coastal region (in Karnataka) as to its different aspects of development process and prospects. Thematically, the book argues that specific sectoral development in the given area has to reckon with other integrated aspects. Agricultural development with reference to growth patterns of different crops, nature of operational holdings and forestry is analysed along with sectoral developments like sericulture and fisheries indicating the available development initiatives. In rural industrialisation, labour augmentation is an essential input and an evaluation of the self-employment programme in achieving the desired goals is analysed; also, the efficacy of a cooperative sugar factory is being attempted. Finally, considering the case of a micro-region, various elements of rural development (including IRDP) are studied as to the performance of the 'Project'. The main emphasis of IRD Programme is on productive asset creation through subsidy. Subsidy should be only a short run phenomenon so that the technique of rural development is imbibed into the beneficiaries on a permanent footing. On the whole, the micro approach has to be specific and sustainable within the macro approach. The intensity and problems of rural development, though different from those of urban development have not been adequately conceptualised. A system of rural development has to include both micro (target-oriented short term objectives) and macro (long term oriented sector and area development) dimensions. It should shred the view of mere project-orientation in different agro-economic systems and objective regimes.(jacket).
