In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Format is approximately 5.25 inches by 8 inches. 173, [3] pages. This was issued after Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize. He was awarded the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the ethical force with which he has pursued the indispensable traditions of Russ…ian literature". One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich was specifically mentioned in the Nobel Prize presentation speech when the Nobel Committee awarded Solzhenitsyn the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970. The present edition stated that 'it makes this great book available in an excellent new translation from the Russian by Gillon Aitken. It brings the reader as close as possible to both the spirit and the letter of the original. DJ has some wear, tears and soiling. Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn (11 December 1918 - 3 August 2008) was a Russian novelist, philosopher, historian, short story writer, and political prisoner. Solzhenitsyn was an outspoken critic of communism and helped to raise global awareness of political repression in the Soviet Union, in particular the Gulag system. While serving during WWII, Solzhenitsyn was arrested and sentenced to eight years in the Gulag and then internal exile for criticizing Stalin. As a result of the Khrushchev Thaw, Solzhenitsyn was released. He pursued writing novels about repressions in the Soviet Union. He published his first novel, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich in 1962, with approval from Khrushchev, which was an account of Stalinist repressions. Solzhenitsyn's last work to be published in the Soviet Union was Matryona's Place in 1963. Following the removal of Khrushchev, authorities attempted to discourage him from writing. Solzhenitsyn continued to work on further novels and their publication in other countries including Cancer Ward in 1968, August 1914 in 1971, and The Gulag Archipelago in 1973, the publication of which outraged the Soviet authorities. In 1974 Solzhenitsyn lost his Soviet citizenship and was flown to West Germany. In 1976, he moved with his family to the United States, where he continued to write. In 1990, shortly before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, his citizenship was restored, and four years later he returned to Russia, where he remained until his death in 2008. Gillon Reid Aitken (29 March 1938 - 28 October 2016) was an English literary agent and founder of the agency Aitken Alexander Associates. Skipping university, he studied Russian at the Joint Services School for Linguists in London, and then worked in Berlin for British intelligence. Moving on to publishing, he worked at Chapman & Hall for a number of years and then ran the publishing house of Hamish Hamilton. In the mid-1970s, he embarked on a new career as a literary agent. Among his many famous clients were the Nobel Prize winner VS Naipaul and the Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie. As a literary translator, Aitken translated two books of short stories by Pushkin, as well as Alexander Solzhenitsyn's gulag classic One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a short novel by the Russian writer and Nobel laureate Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, first published in November 1962 in the Soviet literary magazine Novy Mir. The story is set in a Soviet labor camp in the early 1950s and describes a single day in the life of ordinary prisoner, Ivan Denisovich Shukhov. The book's publication was an extraordinary event in Soviet literary history, since never before had an account of Stalinist repressions been openly distributed. Novy Mir editor Aleksandr Tvardovsky wrote a short introduction for the issue entitled "Instead of a Foreword" to prepare the journal's readers for what they were about to experience. At least five English translations have been made. Of those, Ralph Parker's translation was the first to be published, followed by Ronald Hingley and Max Hayward's, Bela Von Block's, and Gillon Aitken's. The fifth translation was by H.T. Willetts. The English spelling of some character names differs slightly among the translations. Revised from 1970 British edition [Sphere Books].
