Dizzy, por su parte, examina su relación con algunas eminencias del oficio: Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton o el legendario (y en este caso inevitable) Charlie Parker. Lo que aquí asoma es el autorretrato de un hombre entregado por completo a su obra que contempla la vida (e incluso el futuro del planeta) con un sentido del humor tan pertinaz como irreverente. Pero To Be or Not to Bop es también una historia oral de la música negra estadounidense durante una época incendiaria y festiva.
